Giant Puffball

Giant Puffball is found in Wisconsin
On our daily walk we noticed an odd looking thing in the woods. At first I thought it was an old ball. To our surprise we found a giant puffball. We have found several little puff balls. And they are always fun to poke and watch the smoke come out of them. I had no idea they could grow the size of a basketball!

Did you know you can eat puffball?
When its meat is solid and white, it can make a very good food! Come to find out, my grandpa use to eat them. How about you, have you come across a giant  puffball?
Have you eaten  puffball?

My aunt Sally shared with me, she found a giant puffball when she was little, with her sister. They decided to kick it. It was all green inside and it squished out all kinds of icky green on to her shoes and socks.
Something I know my boys would love to do with this giant puffball.

Have a great weekend!

  1. They are interesting but odd. I don't think I'd want to try eating any!

  2. Yikes, are we supposed to eat the icky green?? I do love to come across puff balls, and now I just admire them, whereas when I was little I used to stomp on them. :-) I've seen some pretty big ones, but none as big as that!!!

  3. Yes, we have eaten puffballs before! We found them out in the woods and brought them inside to cook. When you cut them open, just make sure they are still white inside. If they are discolored, then I don't think they are safe to eat. I slice them, dip them in batter, then fry them up. They're pretty good! :)

  4. I haven't seen a puff ball in years, but I did not know they could grow that large and I certainly didn't know that they could be eaten. If you do eat one, let us know how it tastes. Does it taste like chicken, I wonder?

  6. Yes! Many years ago, I remember my grandma would saute them in butter, and they were delicious. Just this summer, I found that we had multiple growing, but I found them to late. They were already yellowing. I went back later and kicked them, and watched the spores go everywhere... always a kid!
