Lactarius ~ What On Earth is She Talking About???

Lactarius
That is the name of this mushroom.
With  all the rain we have been receiving we are starting to grow a nice crop of different fungi in our yard.

I like how the cap becomes a funnel. This is the first time we  had the Lactarius grow in our yard. We have six of them growing under our big pine tree in the front yard. Our son Sam is in charge of mowing our lawn. He is keeping the mushrooms safe and is excited to see how big they grow.

I am not sure if this fungi is edible.
I have a Golden Guide of Non - Flowering Plants and it states the following about the Lactarius...some are edible, many acrid, others poisonous.

Do you know your mushrooms?
Do you eat mushrooms from the wild?

  4. I am not a fan of mushrooms. My husband loves them.
    This is a great photo.
We once had a yard helper who knew everything about mushrooms.

  5. I love mushroms but have never had any wild ones. Folks travel to mid Michigan for the annual morel hunt, but I have never gone. Very unusual one you have in your yard. Do take more pics as it gets bigger. Janice

  6. I wish I knew my mushrooms. They absolutely fascinate me. this one is pretty outstanding looking. love that shape. Nice to see someone else who tries to keep their mushrooms growing, I couldn't bear to run them down with a lawnmower either!

  9. I love that your excitement and observations about nature are not lost on your sons. They seem to follow in your footsteps and have a deep appreciation for all things big and small.

  10. How fascinating! and good for your son, not mowing it down. We had a pretty orange domed one and the mower did it in. I tried to read up...if it was poisonous...with no success. They are intricate works of art. We know the creator...=) don't we.

  14. What a cool looking mushroom. I have had wild morels before. A friend made them - she was watching me closely to see if I would trust her and actually eat them. They were good - tasted like a mushroom.

  15. Interesting mushroom! I have been seeing a lot more than normal, but never a funnel... that is so neat! We only eat morels. This year I am going to try and be brave and try the big white ones. I will keep you posted on that adventure :)
