Our World

The daily news. Do you keep up with all that goes on? Do you listen regularly or watch a certain news program?
Recently both my boys asked me why does the news only report all the bad stuff? We hear nothing happy or good. Then both of them said they really do not like to even listen to the news.
Do you have any good advice to give to kids or even adults, when the news of the world starts to weigh you down?

  1. The bad stuff makes the headline. I have to say that between al the bad (and very bad) news, the world is still full of people that are doing good. As a believer, the Bible tells us that the evil will multiply, but so will be the good. We have to keep doing good, speaking life to those around us. I am a feeler, and I take the daily (bad) news very personal. Still, I am reminded that this is not the end. There is life after this life.

  2. honestly I find that taking a break from the news is needed for me to keep my own perspective intact. everyone is chasing ratings so you only see the most shocking and negative version of life on the news. it's so sad. I think being sensitive to what's running in the background of our homes is important when the kids are young. it's too distorting for their young perspectives.

  3. With a firm belief that God is always in control, we go forward with the truth of Jesus who rescues us from (ourselves) and sin and death. He gives us a reason to go on, no matter the circumstances, and gives us hope and a future. It's wonderful that your boys are at an age that you can discuss the things that are going on in the world. It shows us how much the lost world needs a Savior.

  4. Even when the news channels are turned off at home the kids will be talking about the bad news at school with other kids.
I don't know how to protect young kids from the effect of this scary stuff except by removing them completely out of circulation. There has always been some bad news and now that the world is digitally connected, the news is instant and from every corner of the world.

When the news is wearing you down, turn off the TV or radio. The world is still a beautiful place and Mother nature is still doing her thing. There's a lots of good news that we don't hear much about. The bad news seems to carry more weight.

  5. I do not watch the news. Most of the time I don't even know what's going on unless I see it mentioned on Facebook! Every time I turn on the TV to watch the news, I just get depressed.

  6. I rarely watch the news, and when I do it's the local news. I give my local station a lot of credit, they make a huge effort at bringing some upbeat or feel good stories to share. It may be only one little part, but I do like that they try.

  7. My children and I feel the same - there is a need to know what is happening in our world, but oh how depressing it is. Wars, disease, accidents, political upheaval - no wonder so many people are suffering depression. I often have to mute stories too, cos I don't feel my children need to know what is being discussed. Thank goodness for blogging which brings some light and happiness into our worlds.

  8. The news definitely gets me down and recently it's been particularly scary! I try hard to shield my kids, ages 10 and 6 but it's everywhere and hard to avoid! My biggest question is how do we educate without promoting fear? Great post and important conversation to have!

  9. We watch only the National News so we are aware of what is happening. We had the race riots of the 60s and 70s, HIV in the 80s and 90s. I feel that 9-11 was the greatest change to life as we know it for this generation. Sometimes too much news - bad news - isn't a good thing unless the young people have a strong parent at home to help filter the news.

  10. I wish I did. Whenever my hubby puts the news on before dinner it depresses me! :(

  11. I think now that news travels so fast it is twice as bad. The news on TV is a bit sensational and of course they thrive on making us upset and scared. I will not listen to the news or view it. I can filter what I read but once I hear it it is in my head and I can't get it out.

Your gorgeous cards arrived yesterday, I am in love with them. Thank you so much for reminding me of how beautiful Autumn can be.

    Hugs,
    Meredith
