How Special a Letter Is and A Thanksgiving Giveaway

The Special Art of Writing Letters

Our family recently lost a dear friend.
She was in the hospital, nursing home, back to the hospital and then to hospice.
My mom taught my sister and I the importance of writing letters at an early age.
Taking time to write a friend, it means so much to that person.

During our friends time in the hospital, nursing home and hospice. She kept my mom's letters. My mom made it a practice to write Irma a letter each and every Monday during her illness.

While in hospice, she asked for the letters to be read to her again and again.
My parents live on a farm. They have all kinds of fun things going on. They have cows having calves, chickens, pigs and of sharing about family adventures in the letters too.

I wrote Irma as well, sharing about our boys, our adventures and our garden.
While writing the letters I did not know how important they would become later for her.

  2. I love to read and write letters but I am guilty as others and will more likely send an email or a text if that is how you communicate. I still write to a few people, years ago I had MANY pen pals. It has to be wonderful to have all those old letters............just like a diary, I wish I had the letters my dad wrote when he was in WWII. but taht is another long story,

  3. This weekend, we cleaned out the basement (never ending job!) and we came across a box of memorabilia from my mom's house. There were a few letters in there from me, to my mom, when I was in college. I brought them over to her, she is in hospice, too and I read them to her and we laughed. Great memories...text is just not the same! :)

  4. So true, we never know just how much a letter or card means until we're the recipient, just at the time we need it. Bless you, Carla.

  8. The written letter is a treasure and I fear that in this modern age this wonderful treasure may be lost ...

I do write to friends I don't see that often... to elderly Aunts, who so appreciate to hear some news. To hold a letter in your hand is precious - lets all do our best to write to someone today.

    All the best Jan

  9. How so thoughtful of you and your mom to write letters to your friend. I'm sure that your act of kindness will never be forgotten by her family now that she's gone. She must have really enjoyed receiving those letters.
    Big hugs,

  10. That really is wonderful and reminds me that I could do better. A card or letter really lifts our spirits and we don't have to wait for a special occasion to send them. Sweet hugs, Diane

  11. Hi Carla,
I still write letters and send cards, being so far away from home I think that a letter and/or a card is sometimes more personal then an email...and I am someone who saves letters and cards.
I love that Irma had this connection with you all, and I am sure that it meant a lot to her.
Friendship is a special thing, and the friends (like you) that I have made blogging are truly special!
    Have a wonderful week!!
    Hugs, Kimberley

  12. I love written letters. I used to write a lot more than I do now. There is just something so special about getting a letter in the mail, isn't there? I just won two giveaways so I won't sign up--but someone will be a lucky girl. xo Diana

  13. Hi Carla: I love reading your blogs even though I don't usually comment. Although cards and letters aren't possible to receive here, modern technology has been a blessing in allowing me to continue to be part of your lives. So blessed XOXO

  14. Hi Carla,
Such a beautiful and heart felt way to help your friend during her illness. Writing letters is such a lost art. So glad to hear you still do this. It makes my day to get a written letter in the mail. Have a great week.
