On the Road Friday ~ Ashland, Wisconsin

Do you see the Dock in the background?
The above photo was taken in 2012 at our Book Across The Bay ski race.

That is/was the Ashland Oredock in the background.
On my sisters weekend, the Oredock was gone.

My last visit to Ashland was in 2013, and some of the Oredock was still in place.
It was a big change for me to not see the dock out in the bay  as I was driving into Ashland.

The former Wisconsin Central (Soo Line) Ore Dock was the iconic feature of Ashland in regards to its representation of the economic impact on one of the City’s founding industries, its visual impact to the cityscape, and its geographic impact to the community’s waterfront.
Despite the community’s efforts, the deteriorating, unmaintained superstructure on the dock was removed with dismantling commencing in 2011 and being completed in late 2013.

Today, what remains of the Ore Dock is the substantial 66’ wide concrete base which extends out more than 1,900’ into Lake Superior’s Chequamegon Bay.

In October while I was waiting for my sister to arrive in Ashland, I took a little walk on the new Ashland Dock.

The City of Ashland has done a great job of improving the water front.
I enjoyed my walk on the dock.
I am sharing a few of the photos I captured from the dock.

  1. Oh Carla, I loved those old huge docks. It is a visual shock, I am sure, that it's no longer there. Kinda like driving to the north shore and someone's removed the rocks. :-( I'm assuming that the new dock is completely different. Guess I'll have to get up there myself. Your photos are just fantastic. Have a great weekend. Counting the days without snow. ;-)

  2. Oh, I think I've got it now. The top part was removed but the base is still there so it's just as long. Still, I'll miss seeing that huge superstructure. Thanks for informing us.

  3. Such beautiful pictures and I love that you are such an outdoors person. I wish our lake would go back to freezing over, we used to ice skate and just have a great time. It hasn't completely frozen over for several years. I miss looking out my windows and seeing the ice fisherman. Well, they probably miss it a lot more! lol!

  4. Congrats to Diane! I have lived near the beach my whole life and I have a thing for docks, can't pass one up without walking on it...big, small, makes no difference. I love the feel of being out over the open water. Dreamy!

  13. Such a beautiful place, Carla! I think skiing was successful. You seem to be so happy in the photo. I've never tried to ski, so I can't know how it feels, but it seems to be a warm feeling. Hope to hear from you soon.

  14. This makes me so sad to see these pictures because you were just blocks from my home and I was on vacation and missed seeing you. Sniff, sniff. Glad you saw how the oredock base is a cool place now to walk and look at the lake. Marquette, MI still has their big oredock standing. They just built cool things around it.
