A Gift from Grandma

My grandma passed away in January 2014. She fell ill on Christmas night and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. From that night, she slowly faded away.
We spent time with her at the hospital and during her hospice care.

While we all met to clean her apartment, I found this ...

I gave this embroidery kit to my grandma the Christmas of 2012. To find it finished setting on top of her embroidery basket while cleaning her apartment made my breath catch. What a special last gift from my grandma.

My husband helped me frame it in a barn board shadow box.
I placed twinkle lights around it.

  1. This piece is beautifully done, but it is how you found it that I love the most. Better than in a fancy wrapped package❣️Linda@Wetcreek Blog

  6. What a beautiful keepsake finished by your grandmother's hands. It must have touched her to receive this gift from you and now it's more beautiful than ever, for you to enjoy. Years ago all young girls did embroidery.

  17. Oh, Carla, this is beautiful! And I think it may just be a little gift she left behind. Think of it that way every time you look at it. I'm working on two embroidered 'mitten' ornaments for Elsie and Madelyn. I hope they will grow up thinking of me when they see them on their Christmas tree.

I'm going to be shopping for my wrapping paper, gift boxes and little bags this week...I'll be sure to share some bagsdone up with my reindeer stamp!! There are some cute stamps at Michael's but they aren't cheap. I find one and stick with it and a few different ink pads...well, just red, green and brown. Brown looks sort of rustic!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

  22. Oh, Carla! This post is the best! How precious is that hand embroidered "Joy to the World", and to think that you gave it to your grandmother and she finished it. Gives me chills. I love how you and hubby framed it. Now it's a family heirloom. It makes me think about my granddaughter and the quilt I made for her birthday a couple of years ago. I hope she will keep it always. These things mean so much more when our loved one passes. Hugs, dear friend. ~ Nancy

  24. What a wonderful, wonderful post! A gift that your grandma left behind for you. You have framed it so beautifully, and the twinkle lights just set it off perfectly.

For a long time now I have been trying to make and give handmade things to my kids and grandkids so they will have something to remember me by. (I had actually seen, and loved, that "Joy to the World" design somewhere!) Your post just reinforced for me that I need to be doing this. I would like to think that my last handmade piece left behind would be a gift for one of my loved ones. Thanks so much for sharing.
