It is a California Dreaming Hodgepodge

It is Wednesday and it is time for the Hodgepodge.
Joyce asks the questions.
We answer the questions.

1. "The cure for anything is salt water-tears, sweat, or the sea." (Isak Dinesan) Would you agree? Of the three, which has 'cured' you most recently?

I would agree. All three have worked for me.

Of the three, sweat has worked for me recently. I had two closets that were driving me crazy. Saturday I grabbed Jeremy and we got to work. Call me crazy, I just love going in and peeking at the organized closets.

 2. What's something you can't eat without salt? Do you normally salt your food a lot, a little, or not at all?

I can not eat popcorn without salt or my homemade french fries.
I also like salt on my hard boiled eggs.
I will add a little salt to a meal.

 3. Sands of time, bury your head in the sand, built on sand, or draw a line in the sand...which sandy phrase could best be applied to something in your life right now?

California 2009

California 2009

Our boys playing with kelp ... a fun thing to play with when your from Wisconsin and this is your first visit to the ocean.

draw a line in the sand...
I am going to be more firm with myself regarding, it is alright to say "No". I am going to be more careful about what I volunteer to do in 2017 and how much I add to my calendar. Slowing down and enjoying life is becoming more and more important to me. Taking time for relationships. It was interesting, my oldest son asked me this question " Mom, do you think in our culture today we have more shallow relationships?"

 4. A favorite book, movie, or song with an island setting or theme?

 Pirates of the Caribbean

California 2009

5. Yesterday-did you run your day or did it run you? How so?

I ran the day. Yippee ... now if you would have asked me this last week!

 6. You're on an island holiday. Will I most likely find you parked in a beach chair, shopping in town, on the back of a jet ski, or snorkeling off the back of a catamaran?

I will walk the beach for awhile, I love to walk along the shores when I have an opportunity.
Then  I will park myself in a beach chair.

 7. What do you think we humans most take for granted?

Thinking back on the discussion I shared with my oldest son, I am going to say relationships. I think we take them for granted, we forget they need love and care.

 8. Insert your own random thought here.

A friend shared a quote with me that her father would share with her after each visit.

Always look forward, never backwards
what is gone is gone.
Keep an open mind. You can learn so much from others, however old you are.
Let it be. Only worry about things you can change, leave everything else alone.

  1. That's a great quote! We were in California in 2009 too!! I eat salt on the same things. I'm trying not to use as much on other things. Always enjoy your hodgepodge answers!

  3. Wonderful post, my friend. I do not think you're crazy looking in on your organized closets...I do the same when I clean/organize a room - it feels so good :)

Such wise words at the end - thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful day! Hugs!

  4. How awesome that your son had that question. I know that you and your family are living intentionally, and loving deeply. It is a good question to ponder though. I loved the pictures of you and your family in California, such fun memories! Great quote at the end, it is a good one... only worry about things you can change, love that! And yes, organizing closets and messy spaces just brings such peace to our hearts to know what is in there, and where everything can be found. Have a blessed and lovely Wednesday :)

  5. I LOVE your gorgeous last picture, and the one of the boys playing with seaweed. They are my favorites. I LOVE organizing things! For some reason, it calms me down. And YES, whether I clean out a cabinet, drawer, or closet, I keep going back to it and looking! It's a good feeling. I need to do what you are doing, say NO more. Yes, I do think most of us take relationships for granted, and only realize it when it's too late.

  6. Carla,

I would probably be walking along the shores also, collecting seashells. I have jars of them from our travels. Appreciate those quotes.

    Have a blessed week,
    ~Kiki~

  7. This is a very thought-provoking post, Carla. I'm especially taken with your son's question -- what an observation for a young man to make. I get excited at organized closets, too. In fact, my hubby and I have been discussing the need to purge again. Just feels good to simplify. xo

  8. I'm very impressed by your son's thinking. Very mature. That last picture is gorgeous. So beautiful. Would love to be there. And I have been know to look more than once at the job I have done. Just a feel good.

  9. I am hoping that Mr BC will be feeling well enough for our spring trip to Santa Barbara CA, for some sand sitting.

  10. Gosh, I could not agree with you more on these answers! We have much in common.Except that I need to work on #5 more. Today, my day ran me. Or, maybe it's just that I was incredibly lazy!

  13. I love that last quote, Carla. We often hear that we shouldn't live in the past or carry the mistakes of the past around but that's difficult. Whatever happened to, "Remember what happened the last time you tried that?"!!! So I have to side with this quote in that we need to focus on what we can change...that's the core of it all.

I love water, although I can't swim! lol! I love sitting on the beach but I still love to hop on our wave runners or float on a kayak. I try to stay in touch with that part of lake living. It looks like your family vacation was fun! I miss those.

Thanks so much for your nice comment on my last post!!! :-D

  14. I'd love to be walking on a beach with the sun shining down. It's been so dark and dreary here lately. Lovely post, Carla, and I love the quote. Great advice in that quote!

  16. I love the last quote and the last picture. And your son's question ... that's a pretty accurate observation. I feel as if everyone being so focused on their electronics and social media has a lot to do with that.

I'd walk on the beach too, if it wasn't a crowded beach, before sinking down into my chair!

  17. When I decided to draw that line in the sand of saying, NO, it was quite liberating! I was always saying yes to everything anyone needed/wanted. Not anymore. Now, I pick and choose. If it's going to cause stress, the answer is, NO. I cleaned out and organize (a little) my closet yesterday. But I did not like it. :) Have a great day!

  18. I enjoyed this one....you have me dreaming of the beach on this cool and breezy January day! Loved your answers, and the quote from your friend's father is truly words of wisdom!

  19. I am a huge fan of the Wednesday Hodgepodge and always play along in my head. This one is super fun, because I love the beach, live there and never take it for granted. I would say that the sea (or the view of it) is my go to cure and that I have burying my head in the sand as of late. As far as the island thing goes, well I live on one, and while sitting on a chair does occasionally happen, I spend most of my time, cleaning and cooking and doing all the normal stuff. Now if I were on a Caribbean island...that would be a different story altogether! ;)

  20. Wise words in your random thought and your son sounds very sensible too :)

  21. What beautiful pictures! My toes felt happy just seeing that sand :)
I am with you on salt. I keep it in moderation, but popcorn just isn't right without it!

  22. love your random thought! Thanks for visiting over at my blog - wanted to come visit yours. Really pretty pictures!!

  23. I forgot about hard boiled eggs. I can eat other kinds without, but not a hard boiled egg. They need lots of salt! Yes, relationships take nurturing and I fear we are losing some of that skill. Your beach pics are so pretty!

  24. Love that last quote, so true! 💕Love seeing those pics of you and your sweet family in CA! We have never been! Someday, I hope! The farthest I've ever traveled was NH to AZ. My girls love Pirates of the Caribbean! Oh and Jeff and I tackled our master closet just this last weekend!
