Tom Thumb Popcorn

This past garden season we grew popcorn.
We purchased seed from Seed Savers Exchange .

Tom Thumb Popcorn

aka Hulless, Dwarf Rice, Squirrel Tooth

 dwarf 3 1/2 feet plants
produce 1 to 2 ears each
good for short seasons

We enjoyed the flavor of  Tom Thumb popcorn.
When we popped it up, it was a grand feeling that we grew the popcorn.
We harvested 2 1/2 quarts  ...  3.25 pounds.

We plan to grow popcorn again this garden season. I am just starting to study my seed catalogs.  We are thinking of  trying a different kind.

Do you have a favorite popcorn?

How about a favorite popcorn topping?

  1. Good for you for growing your own pop corn. A good harvest...They are so small and cute. Do you remove the corn of the cobs while fresh or do you dry the corn on the cobs? I bought some giant popping corn but haven't tried popping any yet. I might just try it today.

  3. What fun! It's been years since we grew our own popcorn but it's always so tasty! We put our popcorn in a big bowl made especially for popping it in the microwave and it's so much better than buying those bags with extra ingredients. I melt a little real butter and add just a little 'lite' salt. Yummy!

  5. Besides being a snack, they are so cute, Carla. Is the corn hard on it or did you dry it? I have no idea... xoxo Su

  6. This is so cool! I have never heard of it, it is so CUTE! I imagine a squirrel or crow could eat an entire cob. Does it taste the same as regular when it is popped? It must taste way better, being as it is straight from the garden. I can actually SEE how fresh it is. The cobs look so perfect; around here, most of the cobs are partly eaten by creatures and birds.

  7. Now that would be a fun crop to grow, looks rather time consuming taking the corns off the cob though. Have fun planning your summer garden.

  9. Your kernels are such a pretty color. We ended up planting Japanese White Hulless Popcorn, so a very pale color, but tasty! We have enjoyed eating it :)
I am currently obsessing over Rosemary Parmesan flavor... Yum!

  12. Wow, you did great with your popcorn harvest! I haven't had much luck growing corn here. I think our season is far too short. I can imagine how wonderful it felt to eat your own homegrown popcorn! :)

  14. I really don't know anything about the varieties of popcorn. Maybe you could write a post about the different ones and educate this Southern girl, hint, hint! ;P

  15. That's wonderful! I grew popcorn long ago when I had a sunny garden. It was fun! I had a bit of a bug problem--I can't remember the type of bug or the variety of popcorn, but since I grow organically I think I used insecticidal soap or something and lived with the imperfections. The popcorn was delish. Enjoy!

  17. How awesome is that! We just buy Pop Secret or I will by some organic online. I like to put Nutritional Yeast Seasoning on mine.
