The Heart of the Matter

 The Heart of the Matter

It all began on Tuesday, April, 11th.
When I received that phone call.
My sister telling me our dad had a heart attack.
He is awaiting surgery.
How fast can you come?

My dad was in a hospital over two hours away from me. When you wish you could fly like an eagle. You have to drive, and I had to drive in road construction.

You get to the hospital.
And you see for the first time, your dad, broken.

My dad, who is strong. The one who chased the bats out of my room.
My dad, the one who took me out for ice cream after I received a bad hair cut in 8th grade.
My dad, who taught me how to drive.
My dad, who walked me down the aisle.

All of a sudden, I have to be strong for him.
Our roles are switched.

And my mom, who is also trying to keep it all together. Who drove my dad to the first hospital, not knowing he was having a heart attack, she drove in a snow storm.
My mom, watching my dad go off in an ambulance.
My mom, who needs to drive back to the farm, in a Spring snow storm.
My mom who needs to make decisions about the farm.

My dad had open heart surgery on Wednesday, April 12th.
My dad who is the strong one, who helps everyone else, and does not ask for help from others.
He now is broken.
He continued to say to me, "The doctors, the nurses, they all are so nice. This is not the world we see on the news. The news that is all full of hate. The news that puts America v.s. America or the World.
This is LOVE. This is what we are really all about."

My dad who after surgery can not make it to the bathroom.
My dad who cries out in pain. Who moans out as the body makes adjustments.
My dad who says "I am sorry" to the staff in ICU.

I remind my dad, it is alright. They understand if you cry out in pain, they are here to help you.
This is LOVE.

Wonderful people loving and caring for my dad.

Up and down we went through the weekend.

I am happy to report, Tuesday, April 18th my dad was on his way to spend a few days at my sisters.
My sister is only 30 miles from the hospital.

My dad's first thing he did when he was discharged from the hospital.
Was say out loud "I can put on underwear."
He put on underwear, his T-shirt and his baseball cap.

His first night out of the hospital went well.
We are praying for recovery to continue to go smooth.
The doctors say, that if all goes well, July 4th will be the "You DID IT"!
My dad is already planning his party.

Thank You for the love, the support and prayers.

As  many of you remember, I have a tradition to make my boys an Easter Cake.
I arrived home late Friday night and we planned to head back to the hospital Easter Sunday.
On Saturday I did some catching up and made my Easter Bunny Butt Cupcakes.
I did take a few to the hospital.
My dad got a chuckle.

  4. Oh Carla, I had no idea you were going through this. I am so happy and thankful that your dad is getting better and has been released from the hospital. Hope he gets well very soon. Carla, I love the paragraph you wrote about the doctors and nurses and love. I just hate listening to national news any more. There is more love and kindness and caring people in this world than the news media likes to report. I'll be thinking about you and your family. Love, Henny

  5. Sweet Carla, I am so glad to read your post. You and your mom have been through a nightmare fr sure. Your post is a great tribute to a wonderful, humble, and caring father. What a great example he is to us all! I am amazed that you baked anything at all!! But they are so cute. I wish the target date was not so far away, the waiting is always the hardest part. Keep me posted and let me know anything you need. Still praying!!

  6. I am smiling through tears as I read your post, Carla. It is so hard to watch our strong parents do a 180 and be the ones that depend on us. I so understand that. It is a difficult adjustment at any age. I am glad your dad survived the heart attack. Recovery is very painful and they never talk about that end of it...it is all about the life-saving effect.

I have a feeling he is going to be dancing a jig on the 4th of July and OH! What a celebration that will be!!! xo Diana

  11. I remember when my dad had heart surgery over 30 years ago...and even after his second surgery 10 years later they were much more advanced. I hope your dad is feeling better, and if he was like my dad, many breathing exercises. Keep us posted and my prayers will go out to your dad. I fully felt like I was reliving my own dad's surgery as he was the strong one of the family. Cute bunny butt cupcakes BTW. Janice

  13. This is great news that your dad it through the worst of the recovery and now starting to mend and get back into life. As time goes on and he gains his strength he will feel like a new man. That blood is pumping to all parts of his heart now! That will help him feel good again. So glad that you all are able to be there for him. This is hard when our parents now need our care. Thinking and praying for you Carla and your family especially your sweet dad.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  14. I'm so glad he is home. Life changes in an instant and especially for the one it happens to. I love his thoughts on the doctor's a nurse's. He is right, the news makes everything evil. (that's why I never watch it) My dad was saying "I'm sorry" all the time. We told him he had nothing to be sorry about. Also he was excited when he was able to put his underwear on too, something we take for granted each day. ((Hugs))

  16. Oh, Carla, I'm so glad your dad is home and recovering. Many prayers for you and your family. Your dad sounds a lot like mine--a tender man, who is more of a man (IMHO) than the ones who are bullies and braggards and pompous _____s. Anyway, bless you and your papa. July 4 will be extra special this year. Hugs.

  17. What a tough time to go through, oh those calls that come are so hard, and indeed, you wish you had wings like a bird to be there instantly! I'm thankful that everyone managed to get things done at the farm, and that your dad had such wonderful care full of love at the hospital! The party on the 4th of July will be very special indeed! With great hopes that your dad will go on to feel much better after the surgery! Hugs to you today dear friend!

  18. Thoughts and prayers continue from here my friend, you put this into words beautifully. I know that these early days are very difficult - but little by little, his body will continue to heal and he will gain strength. I know my father had a difficult time because he was scared to do anything, but as he took baby steps, took it one day at a time, his body began to heal and he felt like himself again. It's also a wonderful reminder to everyone to remember that there are wonderful people in this world, the fact that your father recognize the doctors and nurses while he was in the hospital shows his appreciation and gratitude. What a great reminder for all of us!
