Be YOU

Be You

Have you ever struggled with needing to fit in?
Trying to be someone else to fit into what others want you to be?

I recently had this discussion with my boys.
It was a good reminder for me as well.

You have been made to be YOU.
You do not need to be anyone but you.
Know yourself, be yourself, like yourself.

There is nobody just like you. Never has been, never will be. Only you can be you.

Be You

The poet e. e. cummings wrote:

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing
its best, night and day, to make you everybody else
means to fight the hardest battle which any human
being can fight; and never stop fighting.

  2. That's good advice and i try to follow it. We will be judged by others wether we try to be who they want us to be or wether we are ourselves so, yes, be who you were meant to be Good job on teaching this to your boys.
    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs, Julia

  3. Be you, no one else is qualified to do it.

    :-)

I don't know who said that originally, but it is a famous quote. Maybe Oscar Wilde?

  4. Great advice and important for the young ones to learn early on in life!

  5. Quite right too - and beautifully put. Don't be part of the herd. I've done my very best not to fit in all my life...Mrs Britain tells me I'm very good at it...

  6. I have always loved e.e. Cummings poetry! I have a book of his, but don't think this is in it, how neat! Yes, God has made each of us to do our own thing with the gift He has given us. We are bound to fail if we are not true to ourselves. Noe don't tell me the boys want this car!!!

  8. It certainly doesn't hurt for any of us to be reminded of that.

  10. I'm glad you and your children could have that talk. I was a people pleaser for a long time and that can get a person in a lot of trouble.

  12. Yes!

This also reminds me of something that Liz mentioned in her interview on my blog this week. How Mr. Rogers used to say "I like you just the way you are." Such a reassuring thing to hear.

Also, the quote by Oscar Wilde: "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."

    :)

    I hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

  14. It would build character and self esteem too. I think we all need to be reminded to be ourself. I saw a sign recently that said...'Be yourself, everyone else is taken'. I wish I'd have bought it, it was comforting and true and fun. He who hesitates...well...someone else bought it first. Probably a bit pricy.

  16. Well said Carla! It would be way too exhausting to try to be any one else but me! Life is way too short :).

  17. This gets easier by your 70s, I promise you. But oh that I learned that lesson in my 20s, no, in my teens.
