It is all in the Hops and it is the Hodgepodge!

Over the Labor Day weekend we visited my sister and brother in law. They recently purchased land. This is one of the mighty pine trees that is on the property.

Hello Friends, it is Wednesday and that means it is time for the Hodgepodge.

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

 1. Tell us a little bit about the best birthday you've ever had.

12/12/2012 that was one of my best birthdays. My friend Lori came up with such a unique way to celebrate the special day. It also happened to snow early in Northwest Wisconsin. My special day was a day of cross country skiing with my family.

 2.  In what way(s) have you changed in the last five years?

I am an empty nester. A mom to adult boys. A military mom.

I continue to learn and grow, fall and get back up.

 3. What's your favorite thing about the street on which you live?

I happen to love our Flower Shack.

Fresh Cut Flowers on Arlington.

Our neighbors are friendly and they encourage me by saying how much they enjoy seeing our flowers.

4. The Hodgepodge lands on National Beer Day...are you a beer drinker? What's a recipe you make that lists beer as one of the ingredients? If not beer, how about yeast?

The photo above and below show our hops. I use hops in my bouquets.

My husband started to make his own brew last year. This season he is going to try using our homegrown hops for his micro brew. In is study of beer making he has learned the flavors come from the ground up. I am excited to try this brew from our own little garden.

 5. As I grow older I would like to be a woman (or man, if there are any men in the HP today) who __________________________.

continues to grow. I want to continue to grow as a parent to adult children.

To have grit when things do not work out they way I thought they would.

To have patience to weather the storms of life.

 6. Insert your own random thought here.

That is what is for dinner.

We have enjoyed another great tomato season.

  1. Your tomatoes are beautiful, Carla! TG was so discouraged this year because while usually he is able to grow some nice tomatoes, this year they would not grow. The only place he has to put the plants is rather hot with full sun at the hottest part of the day, and he wondered if maybe that was the problem, or if he bought the wrong kind of plants, or both. I was disappointed because his homegrown tomatoes always taste so good! But they've had good ones in the store, if a trifle expensive, haahaha! Happy fall! xoxo

  2. Your tomatoes are gorgeous! So what will your sister and her husband do with the land?

  3. Great post, Carla. I love all your thoughts and I think it's really neat that you and your husband are both contributing to the beer making! That must be so fun and I bet it's going to be very tasty!!

  4. Your tomatoes look so good. We did not grow any this year, we were on the road too much to keep up with them, but my daughter's inlaws brought us some regularly. Good luck with your brewing! Hope your son is doing well.

  5. I love fresh tomatoes! Yours are gorgeous. My brother-in-law usually has TONS of heirloom tomatoes but this year, we had a weird VERY HOT week at the wrong time and it caused the tomatoes to not set any more blooms. How long is your growing season?

  6. That birthday sounds fabulous indeed. I am a summer-loving girl, but I wish I could go cross-country skiing someday.

I don't drink beer, but the craft of beer making sounds fascinating to me. I really hope your husband's beer from your own hop comes out great.

  7. Whoa! Those tomatoes are going to be awesome in that BLT! How fun to have beer from the ground up! I enjoyed reading your answers! Hope the rest of the week is good.

  8. I love delicious BLTs! Thank you so much for my card!!! I have it displayed in my art studio. :D

  9. Fun! Your tomatoes look very healthy. Hops...wow, very impressive. I've been an empty-nester for about a decade. The nice thing is my adult kids still live nearby, so I'm happy. :)

  10. Love that you still keep your flower shack going and your neighbors and friends enjoy seeing your flowers. Your garden tomatoes look so good. How fun to grow Hops and your husband is going to try them in his micro brew. It is hard when you become empty nesters but so wonderful to see your adult kids starting off on wonderful journeys in life. Oh my those trees on your sister and BIL new property. Amazing. Have a great rest of the week. xoxo Kris

  11. It sounds like your neighbors really like the flower shack, Carla. That's interesting that your husband is starting to make his own beer. My brother tried that once also. Your tomatoes are coming along nicely. You have some big ones there. Nothing like BLT's. I love your answer to number 5. I feel the same way, dear friend. Have a good September week.

  12. Never drank beer but it was great for putting stews, etc.

Now neither of us drink. :-)

  13. How exciting about the land that they purchased. Sounds like a lovely birthday celebration. You have had a lot of change in the last five years. Yes, we must always get up which isn't always that easy. Sounds like a very nice street. That is interesting about the flavors coming from the ground. Yes, patience is a good one to have as you grow older. Yum on the tomatoes. We had a great crop this year but sadly had to pull them all out because Mark can no longer have tomatoes.

  14. That is one mighty big pine! Good luck on the beer making. Janice

  15. Those tomatoes look tasty :)

    All the best Jan

  16. Your tomatoes look amazing. I bet those BLT's were so good! That is great about your sister and brother in law's new land. How exciting!! I bet your neighbors do love your beautiful flowers. I can't wait to hear about the homegrown hops beer!

  17. Somehow I missed this email in my inbox and just stumbled across it. That's quite the pine tree Jeremy is holding up!!

High Fives from Wisconsin!
