Blue Moon Greetings

Blue Moon Greetings

The moon belongs to everyone, the best things in life are free.
Susan Branch

A blue moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year, either the third of four full moons in a season or, a second full moon in a month of the common calendar.
The phrase has nothing to do with the actual color of the moon, although a literal "blue moon" (the moon appearing with a tinge of blue) may occur in certain atmospheric conditions; e.g., when there are volcanic eruptions or when exceptionally large fires leave particles in the atmosphere. This phenomenon is specific to calendars. Lunar calendars like the Indian national calendar always have one full moon a month.

Early this summer, we enjoyed a moon walk with Judy and Mr. Cranberry of Cranberry Morning

Moon walks.
Taking a drive up to the highest point of the area you live.
Boat rides out on a lake.
All are ideas of ways to take in the beauty of the moon.

I love to cross country ski during a full moon. With the snow twinkling like diamonds, the moon glowing and  me sliding along the snow with my skis.

Do you have plans to get out and enjoy the blue moon tonight?

This lunar event will not be seen again until January 2018.

Enjoying Summer Hodgepodge

Welcome to the Hodgepodge

Joyce asks the questions.
We answer the questions.

 1.  I recently read here about four secrets to happiness from around the world. They were-

Overcome your fears by facing them head on, allow yourself to relax and reset, work to live versus living to work, and find the good in life. Not sure if these are the actual secret to happiness, but which of the four do you struggle with most? Which one comes most easily to you?

The one that I struggle with: over come your fears by facing them head on.

The one that comes most easily to me: work to live versus living to work.

 2. How would you spend a found $20 bill today?

I am going on a trip next week. I would put it in my trip fund.

 3. Ego trip, power trip, guilt trip, round trip, trip the light fantastic, or trip over your own two feet...which 'trip' have you experienced or dealt with most recently? Explain.

Round trip...Summer is a busy time for trips. Trips back home to visit my parents, trips with our two boys, trips to the community gardens and upcoming trips.

4. If you could master any physical skill in the world what would it be, and how would you use that skill?

My boys love when I jump with them on the trampoline. But I do not really jump. I jump once or they make me jump, not sure how they do this. They get close to me, both of the jump and I fall over. I laugh so hard, they laugh so hard. And then I usually end up peeing my pants. I know it, how silly! That is exactly why I need to master this physical skill!

 5. As July draws to a close, let's take inventory of our summer fun. Since the official first day of (North American) summer (June 20th) have you...been swimming? enjoyed an ice cream cone? seen a summer blockbuster? camped? eaten corn on the cob? gardened? deliberately unplugged? watched a ballgame? picked fruit off the vine? taken a road trip? read a book?  Are any of these activities on your must-do-before-summer-ends list?

I have enjoyed ice cream. I have camped, gardened, picked fruit, took a road trip and read a good book.
I have swimming and corn on the cob still on the Summer to do list.

 6. The Republican Presidential candidates will debate on August 6th. What's your question?

Are you telling the truth?

Captain America is always honest.
xx oo
I really like Captain America.

7. What's your most listened to song so far this summer?

I do not really have one. I love music and listen to so many wonderful songs.

 8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Happy Summer

The Perfect Bench

I was out and about with a friend a few weeks ago and we spotted this fun bench.

I love how much creativity is all around us. It makes life so much fun!

What have you spotted recently that made you stop and say, "That is so creative!"?

Peaches, Beans and Mars

Peaches, Beans and Mars

What is the big deal about peaches, beans and Mars.
That is just what I have been busy doing.

I order peaches from our local grocery store.
4 Lugs of fresh Georgia peaches!
And in the start of a Wisconsin heat wave, I was busy canning peaches!

After sweating away in the kitchen, the next day I took a trip to Mars.

Journey To Space
at the
Science Museum of Minnesota

I will have more on this journey in a future On the Road Friday post.

And the beans are ready!

Wishing you all a great weekend.

A Fun Summer Craft To Do With Kids

I learned how to do this fun new way to do Tie-Dye at 4-H camp several years ago.
I recently did the craft again with the boys.

 Supply List

White T-Shirt
Sharpie Markers
Plastic Cups
Rubber bands
Alcohol
Eye Droppers

You begin by thinking up a design. I did flowers.
Using the cups you place them under the T-Shirt, place the rubber band around the cup.
Using Sharpie Markers, you create your design.
Take a few drops of alcohol using the eye dropper and place on the design.
Let it sit for 5 to 10 minuets to dry a little before moving on to your next area of the T-Shirt.

You add as much alcohol as you want the design to spread like a watercolor.

After you have completed your design, let it dry for a day.
Toss in the dryer for a good 15 minutes to set the color.

 The boys got creative!

The possibilities are endless.

The finished product.
You have designed your very own one of a kind shirt.

When was the last time you did a tie dye?

I am in the Spotlight ~ Life Behind The Blogger

Happy Saturday

What an exciting Saturday it is....I am featured over at Junk Chic Cottage

Saturday Spotlight ~  Life Behind the Blogger

Kris over at Junk Chic Cottage features a new blogger for all of us to get to know each and every Saturday. Thank you Kris, for asking me to participate.

"Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive ~ it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?"

Fresh Flowers and Produce
from
The Little Garden That Could

 It all started in May.
A little garden was planted.
I decided to name it, The Little Garden That Could

Plant four seeds in a row
One for the mouse and one for the crow
One to rot and one to grow

I weeded, I loved and cared for all my plants. I received notes in my mailbox about woodchucks eating up my garden! A big thunderstorm pushed some of my corn and sunflowers down. The Little Garden That Could would not back down. The woodchuck moved out of town. The plants straitened up after being pushed down.

 Welcome
Fresh Flowers and Produce
from
The Little Garden That Could

My boys built me a new stand.

I enjoy sharing my harvest. I love to see people smiling as they come up to my little stand.

A flower cannot blossom without sunshine, and man cannot live without love.
 Max Muller

If you are in the area, stop on over.
We have fresh produce, lettuce, beets, beans, carrots and herbs.
And we have flowers.

"Just living is not enough" said the butterfly
"One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."

Dam fails at Paradise Springs

Last summer we enjoyed an adventure at Paradise Springs in the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest  Click here to read about our adventure of 2014

Crystal clear water! That is water you are looking at in this photo. It was so clear it was amazing.

This past week my cousin and aunt shared the news.

Dam fails at Paradise Springs

I am sharing the photos from the newspaper clippings my aunt sent me.

We all are thankful we had the opportunity to visit last summer. It is a beautiful area of Wisconsin and full of history. It think it would still be worth stopping in to see the old buildings and the clear waters.

 Our Pontoon Chauffeur
Thank you for the ride Ron.

Our other Chauffeur, my Aunt Sharon

 Sam

Pontoon boats are enjoyable. They are big, stable, cozy and full of fun little compartments to peek in. My boys always like to take a peek inside the compartments. Okay, I will be honest, I do too.
I always enjoy a ride on a pontoon boat. I love looking at the homes on the lake. We like to each pick out our favorite home and say "That one would be my house."

The comfort of a pontoon boat is just right for me.

 Relaxing and enjoying the ride.

Warming up after a swim in the lake.

A special treat, a pontoon ride at night.

 The lake is calm.

The homes are full of warm light.

And the moon is bright!

Have a great weekend!

It is a Splish Splash Hodgepodge

It is Wednesday! Time for the Hodgepodge.
Joyce asks us the questions.
We answer the questions.

1. When did you last 'swim against the tide'? Explain.

I just never really got into saying the Fword.
The Fword seems to be the thing. I hear it every place I go.

I swim against the tide of saying the Fword.

My real struggle is explaining the Fword to my boys.
My boys both are in shooting sports and shoot with the Rice Lake Warrbirds. My son Sam is on a squad with some young men who are trying to find who they are?? I do not know, they just swear and say the Fword every chance they get. Why?
When did the Fword become a word?

I guess I will continue to swim against the tide and I am going to teach my boys to do the same.

 2. What's the last self-help or self-improvement book you read?

3"Tolerance is a tremendous virtue, but the immediate neighbors of tolerance are apathy and weakness." (Sir James Goldsmith)

Agree or disagree? Discuss. With civility please, because I think we have a good thing going in our very diverse (in geography, age, religion, political persuasion, ethnicity, marital status, upbringing, and cooking abilities) neighborhood here on This Side of the Pond.

We can choose to be tolerant of something and at the same time choose not to participate in that something. While we choose not to participate in that something, may we be setting an example.

 4. What is one of your most vivid memories of the kitchen from your childhood?

I grew up in an old farmhouse. The kitchen was huge! It was the place we spent most of our family time. We had a potbelly stove in our kitchen. My sister and I would cuddle up behind the wall and stove on cold winter nights.  I also loved the cupboards, they were so deep. My sister and I could hide easily in them when we played hide and seek.

 5. How did/do your own children's summers compare with your summers as a child? If you're not a parent, answer as it relates to what you've observed about the current generation of children vs. your own childhood.

I grew up on a dairy farm. I helped make hay the old fashioned way. My dad drove the tractor, the baler was behind the tractor, the hay wagon behind the baler. I would be on the hay wagon with my mom and sister. I loved making hay. We would ride the elevator up to the hay mow. My dad put a rope swing up in the hay mow for my sister and me to play on. The best part about making hay, we always went swimming after. I loved going swimming with my dad. He would toss us up in the air and we would  dive or splash into the water.

My boys are growing up in town. They do get to spend a few weeks on my parents farm each summer. My dad no longer makes his own hay, he has it custom baled into huge round bales.
My boys have made up their own game with the round bales. Bale jumping! They jump from one bale to the other. I am thankful our boys get to  experience some of what I did with summers on the farm.

6. Tell us what body of water you would most like to be on or near today, and why?

Lake Superior
I love Lake Superior.
My grandma Martha would take me up to Ashland, Wisconsin to shop and enjoy the lake at a very young age. I just fell in love with the moods of Lake Superior.
I met my husband while he was attending Michigan Tech in  Houghton, Michigan. We dated for two years and many of the explores we enjoyed during those dating years was around Lake Superior.

 7.  Share a favorite song about water, or a favorite song with the word water in it's title, or a favorite song to listen to as you sit beside the water.

Splish, Splash I was taking a bath!
This song just makes me smile.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

If you have not made a York Peppermint Patty Smore, give it a try the next time you have a Smore making day or night. Yummy!
