Fishing, Kayaking and Sunsets

 

 

Hello August, the first weekend of August was spent with family. It was prime summer weather, with heat, humidity and sunshine.

My fishing buddy is in the photo above. I caught two fish with the little copper dog sitting on my lap.  

I caught a big bass, while he was asleep, curled up in the bottom of the canoe. He did not wake until an owl gave a big hoot off in the distance.

On The Road Friday ~ Devil's Lake, Wisconsin

 

Hello Friends,

This is not a tall tale.. nope it is a true adventure of our time on Devil's Lake.

We will start from the beginning, our friend Bonita lives in Florida most of the year. She use to live in Wisconsin all year around, but her son lives in Florida, so she moved to Florida to be closer to family. 

Each summer she comes back to Wisconsin. Each summer we have a kayaking adventure. Last year we kayaked the evening of the Summer Solstice and stayed out as late as we could during the longest day of the year.

We planned this years adventure for July 16th. Looking at the weather forecast, it said sunshine and a bit breezy. Oh my, a perfect day to be on the water. 

As we headed out on to the water, my husband noticed a dark cloud. Could this cloud be coming our way? No, it looks to be blowing in the other direction. Besides, the weather forecast says .. sunshine and a breeze. 

Well the breeze turned into a high wind, the cloud turned into thunder and we paddled to safety on the shoreline. We huddled under some brush. Our dear friend Bonita is deathly scared of snakes. Snakes were all  she could think about while huddled under the brush. Do you see any snakes? Then we started to ask, do you see poison ivy or poison oak? It thundered, the wind blew and then it was all over. And as we started to dry off the kayak seats we noticed the No Trespassing Sign on the other side of the brush. Oh Bother!!

We got back into our kayaks and paddled on to our destination to the Big Devil's Lake. We were in between Little Devil's Lake and Big Devil's Lake,  in the channel when the breeze decided to become wind and the dark could became thunder. And one does not look for No Trespassing signs when paddling to safety.

We had a great explore on Big Devil's Lake and paddled back to Bonita's  .. to no power. 

To end our evening we went to the Campground Club House and enjoyed a bowl of ice cream.. with every one else because we all  had the same idea.. with no power .. we don't want the ice cream to melt in the ice cooler.

And that is our adventure with our friend Bonita. It is not our first adventure with her. No, we ended up in another storm years past. We were heading home from spending the day with her. We got caught in a terrible storm we had to unload our canoe at a complete strangers because the wind was so bad to travel with it. Thankfully the stranger was very kind and let us leave the canoe to pick up the next day.

No tall tale.. just another adventure with our friend Bonita.. I wonder what next summer will bring?

On The Road Friday ~ Bass Lake, Rusk County, Wisconsin

 Welcome to On The Road Friday!

We are going to take a little trip to Bass Lake in Rusk County, Wisconsin.

Bass Lake is  a fun lake for canoeing, kayaking, and swimming.

My favorite thing to do is canoe Bass Lake. 

The lake has many islands to explore.

 The call of the  Common Loon.

Common Loons are one of my favorite water birds.

I still remember the fist time I heard a Loon call out. It chilled me to the bone.

On the Road Friday ~ Once in a Blue Moon on Long Lake

 It is Friday. It is time to take a trip. 

July 31st, 2015 we had the opportunity to spend the day on Long Lake.

We have friends who live on Long Lake. They invited us to spend the day on the water and for a Blue Moon boat ride.

We started our ride with a beautiful sunset. 

We toured along the lake. 

A celebrity lives on Long Lake.

Or some of you may know him as Mater, like my family does.

 

The Walleye Capital of Wisconsin, Long Lake in Washburn County is a picturesque 3,300 acre, 19 mile long lake reaching depths of over 70 feet.  The clear, spring-fed water, cool deep bays, gravel bars, pristine setting, and miles of undeveloped shoreline.

 Oh my, here comes the Blue Moon.

 When someone says "Once in a Blue Moon," you know what they mean:  Rare, seldom, even absurd.

This year it means "the end of July."

For the second time this month, the Moon is about to become full.  There was one full Moon on July 2nd, and now a second is coming on July 31st.  According to modern folklore, whenever there are two full Moons in a calendar month, the second one is "blue."

 Pontoon boats are enjoyable. They are big, stable, cozy and full of fun little compartments to peek in. My boys always like to take a peek inside the compartments. Okay, I will be honest, I do too.

  I always enjoy a ride on a pontoon boat. I love looking at the homes on the lake. We like to each pick out our favorite home and say "That one would be my house." 

The comfort of a pontoon boat is just right for me.

On the Road Friday ~ First Canoe Trip of 2014

Hello ~

We are on the road today.

We are heading out  to Lake  Knickerbocker, Wisconsin.

 A beautiful lake full of small inlets to explore.

I love to explore the inlets because that is where the birds, water animals and turtles are.

If you are very still on the water it is surprising how close you can get to many of the animals.

That is one of my favorite things to do canoeing.

On the Road Friday - Red's Big Bear Lodge - Connors Lake - Lake of the Pines

During the month of June, we took the boys to Red's Big Bear Lodge. My husband grew up helping his parents. They owned Big Bear Lodge, fine dinning, canoe and cabin rentals.
I worked part time  at the Lodge as a dishwasher after college...that is another story, ♥ a love story ♥.
We thought it would be fun to show the boys where dad grew up.

So off we go.
First stop, Connors Lake, located in the Flambeau River State Forest.
My husband grew up in the woods. His childhood home and the Lodge is located right in the Flambeau River State Forest.
We stopped to show the boys Connors Lake.
 
 

 Connors Lake is a beautiful spring fed lake. Clear and cold, perfect on a hot summers day.

 Connors Lake offers a beautiful playground, picnic area, bathrooms, changing rooms and lots of room to play.

Lake of the Pines has a beautiful hiking trail. We went about 1/2 way because it was getting dark.
On our way back out to the campground, we could hear " who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?" We started to look up and right up above us was a Barred Owl. He continued to talk to us and then flew away.

We enjoyed showing the boys both lakes and hope to spend more time at both of them in 2014.

The Big Bear.
My husband was excited to see that the Big Bear was still standing proud.
He has many memories of climbing it and cleaning it. Mildew or a moss would start to grow on it.
