Back to School Hodgepodge

It is Wednesday!

It is Back to School!

And soon it will be Christmas.. Gosh, that calendar will not slow down.

It is time for the Hodgepodge.

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

Click here to join the fun!

1. August is National Golf month...do you play? Do you enjoy following golf? Have you ever been to a professional tournament?

I played golf once with my friend A. Her mom let me use her golf clubs. It was a hoot of a time. We played golf and drove around in the golf cart just having a good old time. It was a carefree golf day.

My husband works for a company that makes turf equipment for golf courses all over the world. It is fun to learn what courses use the machines that he helps design and create.

No, I have not been to a professional tournament.

 2. Astronaut Jim Lovell of Apollo 13 fame passed away this past Thursday. Are you interested in outer space and what's happening today in terms of space exploration? I am not all that interested, but I keep up with a bit of it because our oldest son is interested in it and I like to be able to chat with him on topics he likes. If space travel became common in your lifetime would you go? Only if I had to go visit a family member who might be living on Mars. How do you personally relate to the idea of exploring something vast and mysterious...does the idea excite you, intimidate you, or something else? I do not mind going off to explore, but I DO NOT want to have to wear a special suit to keep me alive. I like earth.

 3. Describe your communication style in three words.

 4. Do you have a favorite cookbook? A favorite celebrity chef? Do you watch any cooking shows on TV?

My favorite cookbooks change through out the year, right now I am enjoying many recipes from  ...

 The Prairie Homestead Cookbook

A favorite celebrity chef? Do you watch any cooking shows on TV?

Julia Child

I enjoy watching Julia Child cooking shows, I have learned a lot from Julia.

 5. As a child did you have any back to school traditions? If so, did you carry on those same traditions with your own children? Do you have any back to school traditions you've started on your own?

We would go back to school shopping. It was fun to pick out a new trapper keeper, folders, notebooks, pens, pencils and more. My mom took a photo of our first day of school. I carried on with that tradition.

Do you have any back to school traditions you've started on your own?

We had our boys write out .. what are your goals for this school year. And then at the end of the school year, we would have our boys write out... what goals shifted during the school year, what goals did you accomplish and what are you looking forward to for the next school year.

  6. Insert your own random thought here.

School seems to start earlier and earlier.. actually I do not think it ever ends in my neck of the woods. I walk past the Middle and High School of our local district and kids have been at the school all summer.

  1. I just saw a post mentioning 19 weeks til Christmas. I'm still summering here though lol. I love the idea of goal writing with your kids. School does seem to have become an almost year round thing, with more breaks throughout, but less summer. Hope you have a great day!

  2. Hard to believe the kiddos are going back to school. We are taking the two grand girls to Tenessee tomorrow with us as a last hurrah before school begins for them next week. Since they live out in the country and a very old town their schools do not have air conditioning so they start next week instead of this week like the other kids around here. Summer seems to fly by. Have a great week. Hugs. Kris

  4. while I do love Christmas, my mental thought of losing my brother last Christmas day, just does not even want to think of Christmas. It saddens me that kids have to start back to school so early. now days, the little ones start some kind of school at 4 years old. just too young. You did good Carla on your communication answer!! Happy Hodgepodge day

  5. I'm going to try to find that cookbook. It's been a long time since I bought a 'new' one! The cartoon is hilarious. I remember those days....with 4 boys! Hugs!

  8. I like your boys writing out the goals before school, then comparing afterward! I loved shopping for school supplies, and the smell of crayons and fresh pencils! It was like another little world!

  9. This year seems to be passing so quickly! Make the most of every day!

Most schools in England go back in September.

    All the best Jan

  10. What a great idea about goals for your boys. Wish I had thought of that when mine were younger. Most of our schools here go back after Labor Day. Some start the last week of August. My go to cookbook is one from our church. Other than that I have many family recipes that I use and then hubby Bob gets flooded with recipes on Facebook that he likes to try now. Gives me a break on cooking. Janice

  11. Not a golfer. Trapper Keeper brought back memories, I never had one but most kids did. I always made chocolate chip cookies for my kids on the first day of school.

  12. That sounds like fun with your friend. That is interesting about your husbands job. I agree with you on the suits they have to wear in space. Interesting answer on cookbooks and celebrity chefs. That was a nice tradition for back to school. I don't have a lot of memories because my mother was an alcoholic. I think I remember some shopping with my grandmother. That is interesting about you having them write out their goals. I loved that we started after Labor Day.

  13. There is a school system here in town that has a modified year-round schedule. They have a very short summer break, a week fall break, a week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, and a week in the spring. It is an odd schedule (to me) but they have found that continuity works well in that area.

  14. I like Earth as well. :-) I remember Trapper Keepers - loved them! Even bought myself a couple as a homeschool teacher too. I really like the tradition you started of having your sons write their goals at the beginning of the year and a reflection on it at the end. Great way to track how you're changing and growing and learning. Hope you're having a great week!

  15. I love that tradition you had with your boys every school year. I do miss the back to school feeling sometimes. Have you seen the series about Julia Child? I thought it was really well done! I was sad it was only 2 seasons.

  16. That is the best cartoon!! I've seen it before and it always makes me laugh, because it's true!! Also, your Trapper Keeper comment made me smile...buying a new one was a ritual! Today I think the kids all get chrome books or ipads. I think they missed out on the fun stuff for sure!! xo

  17. I love the idea of helping your boys think about goal setting, then to evaluate and discuss them during and after the year. Great idea!
