No Poker Face and it is the Hodgepodge

Hello Friends,

It is Wednesday and it is time for the Hodgepodge.

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

Click here to join the fun!

 1. When someone finds out what you do or where you're from, what's a question they always ask?

I was born and raised in the woods. Really, I was and so was my husband. So when we say where we are from, most people will say, "Where is that"?

We will start with the largest city that is close to the community that we grew up, which is about two hours away. If they know where that city is, we start to head further North into Wisconsin.

It is always fun when we do meet someone who actually does know where we are from.

And they will usually say, "you grew up out in the boondocks"!!

2. Did you participate in 'Greek Life' when you were in college, or have children who did? If so what was your experience like? Taking another tack...have you ever been to Greece? If not, is that a destination on your bucket list?

No, I did not participate in "Greek Life" ... my kids did not as well.

I have not been to Greece.

Visiting Greece is not high on my bucket list.

3. Do you like Greek food? If so what's your favorite dish?

I enjoy many Greek salads.

4. What incredibly common thing have you never done?

I do not have a tattoo.

5. What is a telltale sign that you're upset?

I do not have a poker face. You will know I am upset.

 6. Insert your own random thought here.

A few days ago I wrote about all the dogs wondering around in our neighborhood. I just returned from my walk with our dog Ernie. We met up with a lady walking her dog, she said, "Warning, there are two dogs roaming ahead, they seem friendly, I just want to warn you, because you never know."

Ernie and I carried on with our walk. Yes, we saw the dogs, but they did not come our way. Thank goodness!!

  1. When we travel and people ask where we live we say 'near the bigger nearby city' as most will not have heard of our town. Sorry about dogs on the run. That can be annoying and also scary. Have a great day!

  2. I can relate to your answer to question 1. I always tell people I'm from the middle of nowhere Indiana. I tell them they won't have heard of the area and I'm usually always right... I don't have a poker face and I don't have a tattoo either. Now if I could just grow cucumbers like you do, we could be twins :).

  3. Good morning Carla.. Much like you, I was raised in a very very small town. But, I'm thankful because I've received many blessings from all the people and we are like family. No tattoo here either... and my Texas accent is a sure tell that I'm from a Texas

  4. We live in suburbia but when we are out of state and people ask where we are from we just say Chicago. Everyone knows Chicago. Just easier than trying to tell people what town we live in outside of Chicago. No tattoo here! Have a great week. Hugs. Kris

  5. I love a good Greek salad too! I'm glad the dogs were not a problem on your walk!! I love hearing the word "boondocks" too. It's a good one!

  6. That lady was really nice to warn you. No tattoos for me, I don't even have pierced ears!

  7. You are the second hodgepodger who said tatoo. I don't have any either but didn't think of that. Stray dogs are a fear of mine because of an incident at college. Oye! Enjoy the last days of August!

  8. I, too, grew up in the boonies in rural central Louisiana. We were a European-established community amongst French settlements back in the mid-1700s. A great place to spend my early years. From there, we moved and lived in other small communities that not many had heard of. There is a lot to be said of living where few know about.

  9. That's a good answer to tell people when they ask. Hopefully you can make that trip to Greece someday. Good answer, I don't have a tattoo either. I don't like hearing that about the dogs. I'm glad they didn't bother you and Ernie.

  10. Most folks as me for a loan when I tell them I am a banker. Sometimes it gets annoying though. I grew up in the boon docks too. Usually I can point to my hand where we live. Its fun to live in a state that resembles your hand. Janice

  11. Ahh! Nobody knows the place I was born as it is such a small town. I always get excited when someone does know it.
I don't have any tattoos either, everyone seems to have one now a days.

  12. I’d love to go to Greece to see the route Paul walked and of course Patmos. No tats for me. Too expensive and they hurt. Never been interested in having one. My son got a tattoo to honor his brother Michael when in the Navy: it’s a cross.
Anyway it’s close to bedtime here and I’m beat. Take care

  13. I didn't think about it when I was answering the questions but my emotions show on my face, too. I don't have any tattoos either. I've thought about getting one.

    1. Too bad there's no Greek food and 🫒 olives left in the West Bank. The Israeli government extended their genocide to 3000 olive trees, which the military uprooted, killed with their bulldozers just to be mean.

  15. Carry pepper spray when out walking, dogs hate it as much as perverts and criminals do.

  16. That's funny about growing up in the boondocks! I suspect my kids have a somewhat similar experience, since no one has heard of the spot on the road where we lived in Maryland.
I don't have much of a poker face either, though I try hard not to be obviously grumpy!
Hope you're having a great week!

  18. Greece is wonderful go in the off season if you can.. save yourself from the hordes of tourist.
New Jersey doesn't really have many prominent cities so we just say New Jersey and most people don't ask any further. If they do we will narrow it down to Central New Jersey and go from there.

  19. It was fun reading your 'Greek' answers. I would really love to visit Greece. Greek salads are very tasty too. Have you ever heard the song, "Down in the Boondocks?" Your answer to number 1 reminded me of that. You had a charming hodgepodge today Carla. I enjoyed reading it.
