It is a Badlands Hodgepodge

Badlands, South Dakota

Hello Friends,

It is Wednesday and that means it is time for the Hodgepodge.

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

Click here to join the fun!

 1. April 22nd is Earth Day...what's the most 'out of this world' place on earth you've ever visited? Tell us something about it.

We visited the Badlands in South Dakota. In my opinion it is 'out of this world' with unique beauty.

I found a flower growing.

The colors are always changing in the landscape.

They call it the land of stone and light.

2. A favorite quote, verse, or song lyric with the word earth in it?

"The earth laughs in flowers."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

 3. What's the most trivial thing about which you have a strong opinion?

I do not like when one mixes our coffee roasts. Ha!

We purchase different roasts of coffee. I like to just have the french roast be the french roast. There is someone else in this house that will mix the french roast with the dark roast and other roasts. He makes up his own roast I guess.

Ha!

 4. What's your most commonly used kitchen utensil or tool? What's the last thing you made using that tool?

The strainer. I use a strainer just about everyday.

I strained tuna to make a tuna sandwich for lunch.

5. Marilyn (Memphis Bridges) gave me a great book of 3000 questions, and I'm going to try to use one in our Hodgepodge every week. Here is today's -

What is your greatest extravagance?

Plants!!

Seeds!!

Gardening gear!!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

  1. I would like to go to the Badlands someday! Great pictures and I love that you found a flower! It's almost GO time for the garden!! We generally wait until about Mother's Day to plant (though I have a few things in the ground that are cold tolerant). Have a great day!

  2. What a great trip. I usually wait until Mother's Day to plant and get my flowers too. We are in the 80;s the next few days but it will drop back to the low 60's next week. If I knew the temps would stay up there I would love to get going early with flowers. Patience I guess lol! Have a good week. Hugs. Kris

  5. I like one roast as well, lol. The Badlands looks otherworldly. Biggest extravagance is definitely half an avocado with my breakfast egg & toast. Hopefully my avocado tree will provide fruit soon.

  7. Is this a Dahia? It is gorgeous. Thankfully we use a Keurig with K-cups so don't have to worry about coffee mix-ups. the Badlands truly look like another planet!!

  9. Lovely photos. I am more of a tea drinker than a coffee drinker, but when I go out for breakfast, I always have coffee.

  10. Oh, this was fun, as always! Mixing coffee grounds...hmmm...I mean it happens when we switch out to a new brand, but I've honestly become more picky about simply wanting 100% Colombian coffee. Something about the flavor seems just right. Re: The Badlands, yes, I agree. They are other-worldly and stunning!

  11. As for the coffee. I am completely on your side! Mixing a French roast with other beans is a bold move. A French roast has such a specific, smoky profile that it deserves to stand on its own without being turned into a "house blend" by a rogue barista in the kitchen

  12. Oh, I love your random thought! And yes, I have driven through the Badlands a couple of times and they are stunning!

  13. I picked the Badlands as one of the otherworldly places I've visited. I love it there and would love to go back. So funny about your coffee-related strong opinion. As opinionated and picky (and even snobbish!) I am about coffee, I'm okay with mixing roasts. Usually. It depends. I learned a lot about mixing coffee flavor profiles and roasts when I worked at a roastery, so I have a sense about what works mixed together and what doesnt, and I make the coffee around here so no one else is mixing things that I wouldn't allow. LOL
Enjoyed reading all your answers today - hope you're having a great week!

  14. Oh wow! The Badlands do look stunning and that flower, how amazing to see something growing there.
Yep, I could have gone with seeds and gardening stuff being a big extravagance for me at this time of year.

  16. We visited the Mississippi River one year. It was blue in Missouri and we were expecting it to be the muddy brown. We were quite surprised. That flower is awesome in such a desolate area. What a wonderful area to visit. I think we use our wooden spoons the most in our home. Janice

  19. Hello Friend!
We were in Northern Arizona in an area that reminded us of the Badlands. Looked very similar to the pictures you just shared. My morning coffee is very important to me. I would not like anyone messing with my coffee.
    I enjoyed your Quote.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  20. I'm not surprised that you found a flower in the desert (or it found you), dear Carla, and I am not surprised that your favorite extravagance is something to do with flower and growing! I too like to let the French roast be the French roast, but then I have no issue because I am the sole coffee drinker who lives here! Oh BTW you would be proud of me ... I did not plant them myself but I had someone plant flowers for me back in the landscaped area behind our pool. I have knockout roses and lantana and agapanthus and phlox and scabiosa and some coleus and of course my beloved Kimberley Queen ferns in the giant pots. I water them faithfully! It's about all I can do, hahaha 🏴‍☠️ xoxo
