April Article for the Cameron Chronicle

Hello Friends,

Today I am sharing the article I wrote for our little newspaper's April issue.

"The Little Paper With Personality."

April in the Garden

By Carla TePaske of Cameron WI ~ The Little Garden That Could

With the arrival of spring, there is plenty to do in the garden. The days are getting longer and warmer. Seed sowing is underway and there are plenty of jobs to do.

Cut down old growth of perennials and grasses left over winter.

If the soil is workable, dig in a layer of compost or manure.

If weeds have started to grow, start to remove whenever you can.

Sow your cold hardy seeds. If you have a cold frame or pot close to the house, sow cold hardy seeds, lettuce, spinach or radish.

Prune grapes, roses and hydrangeas.

Watch for bare root sales at local greenhouses.

Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush.

  1. I love it! Short, to the point, and so helpful!! And what are these gorgeous blue flowers? Their color is so intense and deep. Maybe Iris buds?

  5. How wonderful that your garden ideas and thoughts are in "The Little Paper With Personality." I am starting to see dandelions on my front yard now, and they make me smile. But there are lots to do with weeding and cleaning up. Love those purple flowers, Carla.

  7. You make gardening sound so easy -- which it probably is, for you! I am hopeless when it comes to plants. I am thinking about filling my big poolside planters with long decorative grasses this year instead of battling constantly with flowers. Ugh. xoxo

  10. Yes, it's beginning to be yard work time. I mowed both Friday and Sat. The back was so long I had to mow it twice on Friday so was too tired to do the front yard. So did that yesterday, Sat. Then cut back all the dead from one of my flower beds, cone flowers, phlox etc. Lots of bending and I sure feel it today. Takes a while each year to get what I call yard fit. Then began weeding one of the 3 fence rows. We have a terrible thistle problem since the guy behind us won't do anything in his yard to get rid of them...they blow and creep over into our yard. All I can do is try and keep them at bay. So again, lots of bending and digging, but the ground is nice and soft from all the rain we've had. Got about 1/3 rd of that fence row done and maybe can finish it today.

  12. Great ideas. I had my husband pick up some cosmos seeds as they go fast here . If you get them before it is nice out, you usua11y can pick a few kinds. After Memoria1 Day, you get when you get. I toss them in the ground and have great success so far!
