5 Little Hens and it is the Hodgepodge!

Hello Friends,

It is Wednesday and that means it is time for the Hodgepodge!

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

 1. July 6th is National Fried Chicken Day...are you a fan?I do like fried chicken! Do you make your own or have a favorite place to buy from? I have a delicious recipe that I have made in the past, but I have not made it in the past year. We usually purchase our chicken already fried. Do you own chickens? We do, we had 5 laying hens, Molly, Dolly, Holly, Polly, and Lolly, sadly Molly passed away three weeks ago. We currently have 4 laying hens. They make us smile. If you are having a bad day, watching chickens will boost your day, I promise. They are so fun. If not chicken what's your favorite fried food? I also like a good fish fry! My husband is a master at making a good fish fry. Yum!

 2.  What's something you're too chicken to try?

Sushi, I have yet to try it. Our son Sam enjoys it. He plans to take us out for dinner at one of his favorite Sushi restaurants.

 3. When did you last find yourself running around like a 'chicken with its head cut off'?

My husband and I enjoy going to the supermarket together. I try to write out my list according to the store lay out. Well, I did not do a very good job of doing that the last time we visited. So back and forth we went and up and down aisles.

On a side note, while we were shopping at this supermarket we bumped into friends who we had not seen in person recently, we had a quick catch up standing by the cheese.

 4. Something you've done recently that makes you think 'I'm no spring chicken'?

My husband and I recently went on a 14 mile canoe trip. I share about the trip here..

Canoe Trip for Two

I sat in the above chair, well it was not too easy to get out of after the trip. Ha! I did say, "I am no spring chicken."

 5. 'Winner winner chicken dinner'...tell us about something good that's happened in your life lately.

We just enjoyed a full two days with family.

 6. Insert your own random thought here.

During our two full days of family time, we had time to catch up with our National Guard son, who will be deploying in September. He has been busy training and having several briefs regarding the deployment. It was good to get caught up as a family too.

  1. I really love sushi but it was weird getting into it. My son, 15, loves it too so he and I have dinner dates to eat it.

  2. Sushi is a good example of something I'm too chicken to try, too!

  3. Enjoyed the chicken prompts and your responses. I received two "biddies" the Easter I was about 7 years old. I loved those chicks. When they outgrew their big cardboard box, my father hammered together a roomy wood and wire cage. I would let them out and play with them and they would follow me around , getting right under my feet. My parents had prepared me that when school started back in the fall, my feathered friends would have to be relocated to my uncle's farm to join his chickens. It never occurred to me that they might wind up in a frying pan. I still love fried chicken, but it's a rare treat and usually Popeye's, a popular chain of restaurants here.

  5. You have raised such an awesome and brave son! I have never tried sushi either, and have no plans to. But our kids like it. I also try to write the grocery list according to the aisles. City council have put in new rules about owning chickens here.

  6. I like sushi but not all sushi. So funny about the fax. We were just talking with a neighbor about a snow storm back in the 90's that shut Maryland and most of the east coast down for a couple of weeks. Her husband had a presentation to do so his boss made it to the end of the neighbor hood but had to park at the end of the street and then carry a fax machine through the snow to his home so he could send off the presentation he would miss. Glad you had some family time!

  7. II'm so sorry about poor Molly. I know how much you love your chickens. I hope the rest of the others will be fine.
I've never tried sushi either. I don't mind trying it as long as it doesn't contains raw fish in it.
It looks pretty but I'm too chicken to try it also. Lol.

    Hugs, Julia

  8. I love good fried Chicken. Never been a sushi fan but to be honest I have never really tried it in a restaurant maybe with several choices I would like it. I have only seen it in the grocery store and nothing ever looked appealing. Have a great rest of the week. Sorry about Molly.
    xoxo

  9. I love sushi! And I'd also love your fried chicken recipe! I only have a very basic one, but it would be fun to try something new. :)

  10. A 14-mile canoe trip! Wow! I've never tried sushi either, but I don't really have any desire to do so. ;-)

  12. Awww what a cute picture of your American Hero son! I can't do sushi either! I won't even try. It's just not for me. I do love fried chicken but I would never fix it myself. I love to get it at Cracker Barrel! The good thing about forgetting your carefully planned shopping list is that you tend to get lots of extra steps in! And sometimes see friends. You cracked me up with your description of catching up while standing by the cheese, hahahaha! Wisconsinites xoxo

  13. Yes, a good fish fry! Yum!! My hubby likes sushi and I like some of it, but not much. Being with family is always a great thing. That photo text cracked me up. We have a fax machine in our office and it's amazing how many companies still want people to send things via fax...people call and say "this is a weird question, but do you have a fax machine" lol

  14. Actually, we did chicken on the National Fried Chicken day in the air fryer...lol. It was wonderful!!! I miss raising our own chickens. Meat hens and laying hens. We are fortunate enough to have a lady right down the street that has laying hens!! My husband does the best fried fish, also!! He uses Drakes mix, Lawry salt and Mrs. Dash with a beer batter. Yum! xxoo

  16. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about sweet Molly. Big hugs, Carla...and so glad you had time with the family. Your son is adorable, and a fax, huh? I didn't even know they still made those machines. I remember being the fax girl in an office in college. It's was super fancy technology back then!! xo

  18. I can't believe how behind I am on your blog. I haven't been blogging as much so I forget to go visit my friends. Bloglovin has been down too so I don't see any of the new posts! How fun to have time with the family. September is coming too quickly!! I hope you try sushi soon. I get vegetarian sushi when I go...it's a good way to start but you'll probably like the fishy ones too. My favorite is peanut avocado roll!
