| I am proud of my cabbage patch! |
Happy Wednesday Friends,
It is time for the Hodgepodge.
Joyce asks the questions.
We answer the questions.
1. I live in the south so we're pretty much only talking about the weather right now. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you're having today affect your mood in some way?
We have sunshine, I am very thankful for that. We are currently at 0 degrees, we have a mighty wind chill of NEGATIVE 10! It is 11:30 AM as I write this post on January 27th, sitting at my desk in my cozy office space in Northern Wisconsin.
I am very thankful for the sunshine. Even if it is cold out, if the sun is shining big and bright it makes a difference for me.
2. Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?
I love cabbage.
I enjoy growing cabbage.
I will eat a raw cabbage salad with my homegrown cabbage. It is so sweet and crunchy.
We enjoy making fresh coleslaw.
Last year we made sauerkraut for the first time, it turned out delicious.
Yep, I will be growing cabbage again this garden season.
3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children's childhood? What's a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?
I did receive a baby cabbage patch doll for Christmas from my grandparents. My grandma and mom made clothes for my baby cabbage patch doll. I still have the doll and clothes.
Strawberry Shortcake and My Pretty Pony are two toy trends I remember. I have a few Strawberry Shortcake dolls and My Pretty Pony.
4. Something you've spent a lot of time doing lately?
Organizing my seed bin. I went through the seeds I have left over from years past. I went through the seed that I saved from plants in our garden. I made a list of what I needed to order from my favorite seed company.
5. Somehow it's the last week of January...sum up your month in just three sentences.
Winter walks along the river.
Enjoying new recipes, that warmed our tummy.
Cozy evenings by the fireplace.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I pick out two different plants each year to grow. This year I am going to grow a new pepper, Candy Cane. I have not tried growing pumpkins for several years. I picked a pie pumpkin, Small Sugar.
The photo above has two of my different plants to grow for me from last year, baby's breath and bachelor buttons.

Brrrrr!!! Those temperatures are crazy! I do agree with you on the sunshine though. We had below freezing temps Monday and Tuesday but the sun shone and that makes all the difference. I've never heard of a candy cane pepper so am off to google what that is. I hope it looks like a candy cane , but I'm guessing maybe not : ) Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteWow - it is REALLY cold where you live! It is "cold to us" in Alabama right now. I remember my daddy making sauerkraut one year. I imagine yours was delicious!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you have an actual cabbage patch!! I wish I liked cabbage but I don't... I have been doing some garden planning as well. What a great thing to do in the cold of winter- I recorded the temp yesterday as well as I was writing my post. We aren't having temps quite as cold as yours but it's very chilly- this morning it's 0 with a feel like temp of -8. The sun has shone here the past two days which was nice! Stay warm, friend- love your flower pic!
ReplyDeleteYay for sunshine Carla. Even though it might be cold outside, just having the brightness of sunshine can bring a lot of cheer to any day. We love cabbage around here too. I fix it often and it is always gone...Organizing your seed bin is wise. Growing our own veggies is hard work, but so worth it. enjoy your sunshine..
ReplyDeleteWe have sunshine here today too! Yay! Your cabbages look great. You should definitely be growing more of them. Talked to my son yesterday - they have had really cold temps too. Brr. Stay warm Carla.
ReplyDeleteWe are certainly in the throws of winter. You have the magic touch when it comes to gardening. Your beautiful flowers and veggies always are the best. We can dream of Spring and getting ready for summer flowers and veggies. Ahhhh few more months to go. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you for visiting my post this morning...its' so nice to make new friends here in blogland. You are really up there in the cold cold north this week! Wow! We are quite cold here for us in Florida, but I really can't complain when I see what others are going through. Oh, your stories about your Cabbage Patch baby doll and the others are so sweet. As you saw on my post, I have a Cabbage Patch doll, but didn't "adopt" her until I was an adult. Having raised three sons, I never got to play with dolls with a little girl, so I do it now. LOL.
ReplyDeleteYour real cabbage looks so good. And I love sauerkraut. Would love to have some freshly made! (well, I know, it really isn't "fresh", but you know what I mean). I hope you have a blessed and warm and cozy rest of your week. Take care and God bless you.
Ooooh, so cold! I'm glad you're getting sun to counterbalance the wind chill. Definitely, the sun improves my mood. Love cabbage, from sauerkraut to stir fried to raw and crunchy! No dolls for me, I was scared of them as a kid. Except Barbie dolls, though I still had to lock them in my closet at night. Your last photo is so cheery, I love that you grow so many vegetables.
ReplyDeleteWe have sunshine today too which I am so grateful for after almost a week of rain!
ReplyDeleteHow cool to grow your own cabbage.
When you mentioned My Pretty Pony I had to see if it was the same as My Little Pony which I had a few of and loved. Your version was the earlier version of mine.
I need to start thinking about seeds and what I am going to plant this year.
That is so cold! I would not survive in Wisconsin. That is so cool that you are able to grow your own cabbage. I'm afraid I can only keep indoor plants alive. For some reason as soon as I take plants outside, they die on me no matter what I do. Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cabbage. ❤️
ReplyDeletei love both Baby's Breath and Bachelor's Buttons. and cabbage! I used to make cabbage soup every week. Cabbage Patch dolls didn't come out till I was an adult. A few years ago, I saw them in a Dollar Store!
ReplyDeleteI bet cabbage is even better straight out of the garden. Your 3 sentences give January a special twist! With your temps it sounds like another cozy fireplace evening is coming your way.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are so pretty! I like that you pick 2 new things to grow each year. The candy cane pepper sounds interesting! I love cabbage. Have you tried roasting it? Yummm!! We were away and came back to so much snow that isn't going anywhere, it's all frozen and icy everywhere. Take me back to Hawaii!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how cold it must be. I am freezing when it hits the 50's. I think it is great that your grow cabbage in your garden. I don't have a green thumb. I remember my grandmother collecting things from her garden. I liked when she would go to her root cellar to get something she had canned. I bought some cabbage today. I like to sauté it with onions and shredded carrots, then I add cooked chicken and rice for a stir fry. I also like to use rice vinegar to give it all a tang. I am making myself hungry! Thanks for visiting my blog!
ReplyDeleteThat is cold! I'm glad you like cabbage and that you grow it. Yum on the sauerkraut you made! I grew up with that. How nice that you got the doll and the clothes that were made for it. Hope you have a great garden this year. Sounds like January was a good month. Those flowers from last year are so beautiful. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI love cabbage in all forms. Am over Winter now. Will the cold ever go away? Janice
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy cabbage ...
ReplyDeleteHope the extreme bad weather many areas of the US are experiencing clear away soon.
All the best Jan
Dang, that's cold. Homegrown anything always tastes better. I forgot to mention I do like sauerkraut and cabbage rolls. I'm starting to think about what we'll be doing to our yards and garden. I do want to plant more daffodils on the hill for next year.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a blessed evening.
Wow, those are VERY cold temperatures! I'm glad it's not quite that cold here. I guess you probably took your winter walks by the river when it was much more pleasant outside. ;-) I'd love to do that kind of winter walk.
ReplyDeleteHope you're staying warm and cozy and having a great week!
Carla, how special it is that you still have your Cabbage Patch doll. They were really in when my girls were little, and they still have theirs as well! Your coleslaw made with the garden cabbage sounds wonderful. I'm glad you are getting a little sunshine from time to time to warm you up a bit. We had some sunshiny days here too. Feels nice on the face. I love that first photo of the cabbage. I can imagine you are making all kinds of plans for your garden this Spring.
ReplyDeleteI wish you pleasant February days coming up, Carla.
Mmm, I love cabbage! But I hate to grow it. Always the bugs. We've had bad cabbage growing years lately in our state. I grow enough other veggies to make up for it. // As for Cabbage Patch dolls.. I was an adult when they came out in the stores. And my two children - both sons - couldn't have cared less. Haha! // We've had sub-freezing and below freezing temps and wind chills for over a week. Next week - 40s and 50s! Woot! Have a very blessed day, Carla!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited that you're going to grow pumpkins, Carla!! Watching them sprout made me so happy last year. I can't wait to see yours!! Stay warm! We went for a walk this morning...4 degrees outside...and I felt like my eyeballs were going to freeze!! Haha!! xo
