On the Road Friday

Duluth, Minnesota

We love to visit Duluth. We do not have to spend too much money, because we are happy packing a picnic lunch and watching the freighters.

The following photos were taken in 2010. Jeremy and I did a day trip to Duluth in June. We hiked along the lake and split a fancy apple from the Chocolate Factory - check out the Duluth Chocolate Factory

The local Lake Superior Marine Museum has a boat watch pamphlet printed out. You can pick one up and it gives you estimated times that freighters will be coming into or leaving port.

One of my many dreams is to ride along on a freighter on the Great Lakes. I am fascinated about what it is like to be a sailor. What do you eat? What are the sunrises and sunsets like? What are the storms like?

For today, I will just dream and wonder what it is like to ride on one of these amazing freighters.

Peaches

Peaches!!

I have been busy canning green beans and peaches. God blessed us with a wonderful garden!

No, the peaches are not from the garden. :) We were blessed with wonderful peaches from our local market!

On August 29, 2004 in Athens, Greece, a Brazilian runner named Vanderlei de Lima was in first place in the men's marathon at the Olympic Games. He had a lead of almost 30 seconds. Suddenly, a man jumped out of the crowd and grabbed the runner. He wrestled with him, and knocked him into a group of spectators. When he got free, the marathoner continued on the course, but he had lost valuable time. He was soon passed by two other runners. He earned the bronze medal, but many people felt that he had been robbed of the gold. The Brazilian Track Federation made an appeal so that de Lima could be awarded first place, but the appeal was rejected.

The IOC awarded de Lima the Pierre de Coubertin Award for the sportsmanship and grace he showed in the way he handled the incident. In 2005, a gold - medal - winning Brazilian volleyball player named Emanuel Rego gave de Lima his gold medal on national TV, but de Lima did not accept the medal. He said, "I can not accept Emanuel's medal. I'm happy with mine; it is bronze but it means gold."
