On The Road Friday ~ Badlands, South Dakota ~ Badlands Wildlife

We are on the road today. Today, I am taking you back to the Badlands to see all the wildlife that we saw on our trip in September.

 Magic Hour

In my next post about the Badlands I will be sharing more of the landscape, light changes and the magic hour, sunrise and sunset.

Off to find the wildlife of the Badlands.

 Bighorn Sheep
This was an awesome sight. Our first time seeing a Bighorn Sheep in the wild.

 Prairie Dog Cuteness
I know many people are not fans of prairie dogs, I am a fan. We loved watching them. They are so funny. They seem to go and visit each others hole / home.

American Bison
Our son Atticus could not wait to see a Bison. As our trip thru the Badlands was nearing the end, he was getting nervous we would not see a Bison.
As we turned a corner on Sage Creek Rim Road, look what was grazing on the side of the road.

We sat and watch this huge, amazing animal graze.
Atticus was officially Happy! He got to see his Bison.

Thank you for joining me today.
Have a great weekend!

  1. Your first photo has layers of beauty!! YEAH, prairie dogs! I love them! I have only seen them in a zoo. They move so fast that it was very hard getting good pictures. I was watching a documentary on them just his week, and it said that they have the largest language among mammals. Each squeak and series of squeaks means something. They have one sound for WARNING, and another for MAYBE warning, and so on. The bison with the sun shining on him is gorgeous, it looks like he posed for you!! Perhaps Atticus is The Bison Whisperer.

  2. I hope there was a barrier between you and that wildlife, especially the male bison and the big horns.
I'm glad Atticus got to see his bison.
I'm not a fan of those big rodents. They can cause a lot of damage in the fields and damage the equipment.

    Take care,
    Hugs,
    Julia

  3. Great pictures, Carla! I loved seeing the bison and bighorn sheep, the prairie dogs are seen in our acres out back. Once in awhile I'll see one standing up peeking over the grass when it is tall in the summer.
    Have a nice weekend!

  8. Isn't it wonderful to see the beautiful wild animals! Glad that you were a safe distance from that bison, it sure is big! I love that sweet hour of light too, such beautiful pictures that can be taken during that time! Will look forward to seeing them :)

  9. Amazing and I think I would just be silent at the sight of bison. I think they are so majestic. There are farms here where we have seen them. The babies are adorable. However, I fear that the farm bison have a decidedly unpleasant fate. It makes seeing them a little sad. Seeing them wild and free would make me smile...

  10. My granddaughter and I were just reading The Long Winter/Laura Ingalls. It would be amazing to visit the Badlands and also to see the Ingalls Home in DeSmet.
