It is a Strawberry Shortcake Hodgepodge!!

Hello Friends,

It is Wednesday and it is time for the Hodgepodge.

And it is Strawberry Shortcake season!!

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

1. What does productivity look like to you?

Always deliver more than expected.

Life does not give you what you want, it gives you what you work for.

2. What was your fondest (or one of your fondest) memory of High School?

A memory from High School... I was crowned Happiest Female in our class.

 3. What did you do the summer after High School?

I moved in with my Uncle Paul and Aunt Sally, they lived close to the Technical College I was going to start classes at. I worked as a lifeguard.

 4. June 14th is National Strawberry Shortcake Day...are you a fan, and if so will you celebrate? How do you make yours? Have you been strawberry picking? If so what do you do with all those berries?

It is just coming on Strawberry season here in Wisconsin. We ate four strawberries from our little patch last night. Yes, I am a fan of strawberries. We will be going strawberry picking at a local strawberry farm that is owned and operated by an Iraq War Veteran. We have been visiting this farm for many years. It is always a fun morning to head out to the strawberry fields. We enjoy eating them fresh, we freeze lots for winter eating and we also make strawberry jam.

 5. What's something you always splurge on?

Good quality bacon!! We splurge on good cuts of meat. We have a favorite meat market we enjoy going to get fresh smoked bacon, homemade bratwurst and more.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I can not forget the homemade strawberry ice cream.

  4. I am impressed that you make your own strawberry ice-cream! Did you know that I have read that strawberries are the only fruit that has the seeds on the outside..

  5. We have a fav meat market near us and usually get the specials of the week and stock up. Kudos for you for being the happiest female in high school. Now being a female is frowned upon it seems. UGH Janice

  6. Yes, we do buy good quality meat and poultry as well. I refuse to eat crickets. I've never made homemade strawberry ice cream - I bet that is delicious. Our strawberry season where I live is done - too hot in the summer. BUt there are other cooler places in California we could drive to if we wanted. At the store, they sell the strawberries from Watsonville and they are good.

  7. I used to grow strawberries and even had a small u-pick for friends and neighbours but now I have developed a sever allergy to strawberries and no longer grow them but I used to love them and made jam, frozen strawberries, frozen strawberry jam, strawberry shortcake and pies and ate a lot fresh in the field. Now I have to content myself with making the Jello strawberry, pineapple and rhubarb jam. It taste very good but doesn't have strawberries in it.

I hope that your chicken girls are all doing well. I haven't heard about them lately.
    Hugs,
    Julia

Now why I'm I not surprised that you were crowned as the happiest female in your class.
You always come across as a happy person to me and I've never met you.

  9. Oh that strawberry jam looks lovely! Jam is probably my favorite use of strawberries. And bacon is an excellent thing to splurge on. I do have certain grocery items that I will spend a little more on to get good quality, and bacon and meat is in that category! Have a great week!

  10. Well Carla you have me drooling as I love strawberries so much, and BACON! Mercy. We too buy all of our meat from the local meat market and we eat meat at least five days a week -- sometimes more! I love your productivity standard -- a lot like mine which basically says to promise small and deliver big! And I'm not the least bit surprised that you were recognized as happiest female. Your positive attitude and helpful, industrious spirit leaps off the page, as does your love of God, country, and family. Have a great weekend! xoxo

  11. Did you make the ice cream? I love all things strawberry. Darn it, I hate I missed Strawberry Shortcake Day!!! That's probably my favorite dessert.

  12. Love your answer for #1. How cool to be crowned the happiest female in your class. Your summer sounded good and being a lifeguard must have been nice. Enjoy all of the strawberries. We have had a few so far this year from an older plant. The new plants Mark picked up are just sending out runners. Yum on your homemade ice cream!

  13. Yum!! I love strawberry shortcake. I make biscuit type shortcake for ours. We haven't gone strawberry picking in years but we used to. I've been picking them up at Costco and they've been so good! I made a Strawberry Crunch Cake last week and we loved it. I love your high school memory and totally see you winning that!

  14. Happiest Female?? Well, that makes sense!! I was crowned Most Polite in nursery school. I hope it still applies!! Hahaha...and strawberry shortcake was my mom's favorite. Lovely memories attached to that sweet treat for sure. xo

  15. When you freeze the berries do you then just use them for baking, cooking, etc? I froze some and used them in my shortcake which was delicious. The frozen were really soft and squishy, but since I mash mine for shortcake anyway it was fine.

  16. Ah, yes, I'm definitely a fan of strawberries in all forms. I just got a pint from my CSA food share, and I can't wait to eat them. :)

  17. I love strawberries, but didn't know there was a Natl. Strawberry Shortcake day. Bummer, I missed it, but hubby knew it was Natl. Bourbon day, so we had Manhattan's instead of a Martini for our pre-dinner cocktail the other day. In fact it might have been the same day as your Shortcake day. Mom used to make bisquits, but I buy the sponge cake occassionally. Normally we just eat the berries, or put them on icecream.

  19. The canned strawberry jam is wonderful, Carla. There's nothing quite like it. And that homemade ice cream! Loved hearing your answers this Sunday morning. That is the most delightful thing.....'happiest female' in your class. I can really see that in you. Strawberries are so good during the Summer months. It's nice to know a little more about you, dear friend.
