Conversation

A dead sturgeon on the shores of the Chippewa River. Yes, it is a huge dead fish!

It is hard to believe fish this size are in our rivers and lakes here in Wisconsin, but they are. I am not sure how this sturgeon died. We just came across it on a hike along the river.

That brings me to our conversation.

G.K. Chesterton once wrote, "Do not be so opened minded that your brains fall out."

What do you think he meant by this?"

  1. That's a big fish! I think the quote means that there's a limit to how open one should be every idea that's out there. It's ok (and good even) to listen to both sides of an issue but at some point you have to take a stand or a position and be ready to defend it. Thinking critically and coming to a conclusion about a topic that's based on logic, the truth and God's word may seem "close minded" to some if you're unwilling to change your position. But if it's the correct one and you did think about it from all angles before coming to your conclusion then someone calling you close minded simply does not like the conclusion that you came to!

  2. Yowza! That's a huge fish! I love Chesterton and would say there are some who have not followed his advice : ) Certainly listen to what others have to say, but also use your brain to determine if it lines up with what God says. Jumping on bandwagons is so popular now and I think this quote is telling us not to do that without thinking an issue through for ourselves.

  3. That is a big fish! Chesterton's quote could go alongside one I love - God gave us a brain - use it! I am fairly open minded. Chesterton's saying would make a good meme . . .a cartoon head open with crazy info spilling out . . . it would have to be a cartoon - real would be too graphic :-).

  4. That is a big fish for sure. I think Chesterton wanted us to be open minded to the things we see and feel but to be a little skeptical. Have a great start to the new week. Hugs. Kris

  5. Ewww, this is a huge fish for sure. I have heard that Sturgeon are very big. The quote is so interesting I think it means to not be so open minded that you lose your common sense and morals.

  6. Feelings are like weather, quick to change and not great for planning major life decisions. Instead, think of facts as your trusty GPS, offering a steady, reliable route through the traffic jam of decisions. In other words, use common sense. Not feelings or emotions.

We have sturgeon in our Lake Shasta that are huge like that. The last one caught was 11-12 feet - it fought for hours till the fisherman released it. They estimated it was 90-100 years old. They sit at the bottom of the lake because it is so deep. They can be upwards of 500 lbs! Here in California, because they are in a landlocked lake, they cannot reproduce and therefore, if caught, have to be released.

  7. I think he meant… keep on trying to learn things. Don't be so close-minded.
And that’s a big fish. We have musky and carp in our lake and they are big too.
    Have a great week!

  8. There's a whale in your pond! Haha! That's a big fish, but ! I love that quote and I think it has to do with discernment. We get a lot of information thrown at us, lots of ideas and lots of opinions. It's good to be open to new ideas and points of view, but always keep common sense front of mind. ☺️

  9. Eww! To the dead fish but it is fascinating just how big it is. I think that quote means that being open-minded is a good quality but there should be limits. You should question things and use your own judgement.
