The Tale of Three Bunnies!

Several mornings when I went out to care for the hens, I would find a branch of the hens Christmas tree laying on the ground. Above I found this much of a branch left laying with a red bow.

What is going on here? Who is nibbling on the hens Christmas tree? One morning before I went out I spied three bunnies hip-pity hop away from the coop.

The above photos share where the bunnies nipped off the branches.

And so my hens only have 1/2 of a Christmas tree to brighten the winter days. As far as they are concerned.. they could care less about that Christmas tree, they want spring, bare ground to scratch and bugs.

As for the three bunnies, I saw them again last night under the bird feeder eating fallen seed.

  1. Guess the bunnies were looking for food. Better to see them than another animal who could eat your hens. Sweet that you gave them a tree though! Janice

  2. Oh, oh... I see more bunny trouble ahead come the spring. Bunnies multiply fast and can ravage a garden in no time. They are a nuisance to farmers and are considered a pest. They look cute and fluffy but they will eat and gnaw at just about anything that is edible and even electrical wires.

You'll have to come up with a plan to rid yourself of these unwelcome pests. As gardeners, we have many enemies of the four legged kinds, don't we? They seem to increase every year.

    Take care,
    Hugs, Julia

  3. He probably treated the bow, like it was a flower.

I saw a cheeky bunny nibble on a potted plant. He chewed off the stem and left the flower. How rude!!!!!!!! -grin-

  4. I would have loved to seen those three bunnies hopping around the Christmas tree. And I love your little tree, Carla. Makes me smile. The red bows are special on it. What a cute idea to put a tree outside for the hens. Have a terrific week.

  5. Carla, I forget to tell you how I enjoyed seeing your three precious hens in the corner. Do you still have the others? I can't remember their names. I thought that you had five.

  7. You made that Chicken Christmas tree so pretty and attractive that the bunnies wanted to munch on it. I am with the chickens and want spring and dry ground and bugs instead of snow. Have a great week. xoxo Kris

  12. I love bunnies and we are rather surprised when they eat the bottom brunches of our plants/bushes. I still throw out some baby carrots a few times a week for them to enjoy.

  14. Your visit from the rabbits is wonderful :-) ... when we moved here from the city to the country one night in winter, we saw a rabbit and a fox at the edge of the field... so we moved to where the fox and rabbit are good friends say night.
Greetings to you. Your chickens are beautiful.

  16. Be wary of the bunnies. Where's there's one, there will soon be a dozen, and then you'll not be able to get rid of them. We've been trying to get rid of them for several years now. I keep filling in the holes they burrow in, hubby keeps repair things that allow them to get under the shed and or the deck........we're not winning, they are. As a result many of my favorite flowers/plants are getting eaten by them.
