Ernie

"An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language."

Martin Buber

We causally were looking for a dog. Our Boston Terrier, Molly passed away on Labor Day 2018, the day before our son Sam left for Basic Training.

This summer I felt the pull to adopt a rescue dog.  My friend Russ adopted a rescue named Bell, the bond and relationship they had amazed me.

Our friend Rob adopted a dog from Little Red Barn Dog Rescue three years ago and had a good experience with them. We decided to keep an eye on Little Red Barn Dog Rescue.

Ernie was posted. My husband took one look at Ernie and said, "let us try to adopt Ernie." I filled out the online adoption application and hit send.

We were accepted.

Ernie is 8 months old. He is a dachshund/terrier mix. He was found roaming the streets of El Paso, Texas. Little Red Barn works with Texas shelters to try to find homes for Texas dogs here in Wisconsin.

Ernie has bonded well with us and our cat Penelope. He is a happy go lucky fella. He loves to cuddle and have belly rubs. Most of all, his big brown eyes will make all your troubles go away when he looks at you.

  1. Awwww he is so adorable. He doesn't know it quite yet but he found the best family to give him his best life. God puts people and fur babies in our path and you got sweet Ernie. Love his name. He does have beautiful captivating eyes. Congrats on that new fur baby. Your lives are so much better for adopting him. Hugs. Kris

  5. That is wonderful news. I am so happy for you. I miss my Skye so much. It's been three years and I'm really wanting another dog. I am on Adopt-A-Pet for awhile now but it seems when the perfect dog comes up we have some kind of plan that would make it hard to adopt at that time. Hopefully in the new year when things quiet down.

  7. ERNIE IS SO CUTE! And dachshunds are the best dogs. I've had many dogs in my life, but my favorite was the dachshund that we had when I was a child. Oh, you even carved a pumpkin for him. He will soon become part of the family. And just look at those eyes! They are so gentle and sweet. I think he was meant just for you, Carla.

  8. Congratulations! What a lucky buddy and a cutie! I had to chuckle because my husband's name is Ernie, and I had to read this post. ;-) We have a cockapoo, and he has so enriched our lives. (We have a cat, too.) Enjoy your new family member!

  9. I love that...we were casually looking for a dog. Haha. No such thing as casual when there are puppy eyes involved and he's got the sweetest pair. It sounds like he fit right in around your house. I can't wait to hear more about the adventures of Ernie!! Congratulations! He's adorable!

  10. Oh my goodness Carla! This post resonated with me from the first word until the last. What a wonderful story and what a precious boy Ernie is!!!! We lost our beloved purebred Chihuahua, Javier, in April of 2016. We'd had him since he was six weeks old and could just leave his mommy. He was a pet so beloved, that when he got old and his kidneys failed, and he was so sick, it took me a few days to realize what we had to do. Many tears were shed on the day we had him put to sleep. Erica was holding him (she was his PERSON although she had long before that moved away from home; I was his second choice, haha) and Andrew and I stood by. When the vet pushed the heart-stopping drug into his little arm and Javier's head bowed for the last time, I nearly came unglued and was inconsolable for days. We were all weeping. Later that day we all gathered to bury him in the back by the fence, with great ceremony, in a tiny much-decorated cardboard coffin. Oh how we adored him BUT I said, I am getting new carpet in the family room and upstairs bedrooms this summer, and I'm not getting another dog. I lasted only until January of 2017 -- barely nine months. I was lonely for a pet and became determined to find another dog to sit beside me in my chair, and go for walks with me. It wasn't long before I saw my Rizzo (temporary crate name Stevie) on the website for our local shelter. He's a chiweenie -- chihuahua/dachshund mix. The second I saw his sweet scared little face, I knew he was my dog. I still have that picture. It was a Saturday, the coldest day of that winter, and the shelter was going to close within two hours, but TG and I drove over there and within twenty minutes we had adopted him. He is a near-perfect dog. I implore him every day to never leave me. He's just the most wonderful pet. God was so good to give us these angel animals!!!! xoxo
