Raised Beds, Collecting Seeds and Buttoning Up

Hello Friends, we started a big project last week. We built a raised bed garden. I am so excited and happy about this, I cannot wait for spring. The photos of the project will be dirt, you will have to use your imagination to see vegetables and flowers.

My husband did most of the work. I helped when he asked me to move something or fetch something. I helped haul some dirt.

In the meantime I collected seeds and started to put our other gardens to bed.

French Marigold seed pods. Ready for harvest.

The dirt pile! We had dirt hauled in and dumped in our driveway. We used wheelbarrows to move the dirt to the backyard to fill the raised beds.

I helped fill the wheelbarrows. I could not drive them around to the backyard,  that was all Jeremy.

I put away our birdbaths, planted spring bulbs and cleaned our other gardens.

Jeremy also built me a tower or obelisk for my climbing rose. And another for a spring planting project I will be doing.

We put a layer of cardboard down, home compost and our brought in dirt into our raised beds. We are still thinking about what we will do for the paths along the raised beds. Pea gravel, straw, wood mulch? That will be a project for 2025.

And I harvested a few strawberries to add to our fresh salads.

  1. Your beds look wonderful. I am just starting to think about reducing my beds and having a smaller garden. My problem is what am I going to do with the extra dirt?
Actually I'm sure I'll find uses for it but moving it from one place to another is hard on one's back especially when your back is as old as mine, LOL

  2. How wonderful this all is, Carla. That was a lot of work, but the raised garden bed will be so nice for next Spring. And I can't wait to see your climbing Rose. That was so good of Jeremy to build the tower for you. And your bird baths are all clean and stored away for next year. You must be thrilled that your big project is completed.

Wishing my dear friend pleasant November days ahead.

  6. Wow, you've got several of them done! I think it must be much harder than it looks, moving all that heavy dirt and making the frames. Do you know what you will plant in each one?

  7. We have a very tiny yard and not enough room for a garden, but we did have a small garden when we were newlyweds (40 years ago!). My daddy and granddaddy always had a garden and I love produce fresh from the garden. Your raised beds and obelisk look great!!

  8. Oh Carla this is AMAZING! I am full of admiration for people who can visualize something like this, and then know how to make it happen, and most of all are willing to put in the hard work! And how talented your Jeremy is! As you know I cannot grow anything, although I will say that my porthos ivy given to me by a friend a few years ago, sits on the kitchen counter where it can yearn towards the sun streaming in through the French doors, is beautiful and happy. But I understand that it's almost impossible to kill porthos ivy, hahaha! I am so excited to see y'all's garden grow and flourish throughout the new year. xoxo

  9. This is so amazing and I know you will love this so much. I cannot wait for Spring to see how you plant. Nothing better than fresh flowers on the table and fresh veggies in the meals. You guys did a great job. I bet Jeremy needed a. lot of Ibuprofen after all that hauling of dirt. Have a great Halloween. Hugs. Kris

  10. Wow, you have been very busy. It all looks great! So its a French Marigold. Our marigolds have been awesome this year but they are not French. I don't think they have seeds.

  11. I like the raised beds and I do see the vision. Every year, we put in more raised beds and bring in gravel to cut down on lawn areas. It seems never ending. Hauling in the dirt or gravel is backbreaking work that my husband and I do ourselves. We need more rocks but will wait till after the new year. It’s just always some!
I love that tower! It’s good Jeremy built that for you. It makes it more special.
