On The Road Friday ~ Eagle River, Wisconsin

 Hello Friends,

Today we are on the road to Eagle River, Wisconsin. My sister and her husband moved to Eagle River last year. This is their first winter in Eagle River. We visited the weekend of February 17th - 19th. It was a fantastic weather weekend.

Saturday morning we hiked the trails that my brother in law has been making on the property. It was a beautiful sun filled morning. 

 Saturday evening we went to a hockey game, we watched the Wisconsin Windigo. 

 

 The Eagle River Sports Arena is recognized by the Wisconsin Registry of Historic Places. It really is a unique building. It is very comfortable watching hockey in the stands.

 

Home to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame, Eagle River is where to find our state’s best hockey memorabilia and honors of its 69 inductees. The Eagle River Sports Arena has been housing the Hall of Fame since 1975; but long before that, the arena held a history of its own for its notable dome shape, constructed by local volunteer carpenters and towns people. Built in 1933, the arena was designed to promote winter tourism in the area and is now recognized by the Wisconsin Registry of Historic Places.

 The game went into overtime and the Windigo won!

1.  It may be a little shocking, but National Static Electricity Day is January 9!!  Do you often get shocked often when you touch metal? 

Thankful to say, no I do not have to much trouble with Static Electricity. I do have trouble with lighting. September 2017 lighting hit my bird feeder. It continued to travel from the bird feeder to the side of the house.

Thankfully, we only had a small amount of damage.

I will take Static Electricity Day instead of National Lighting Day. Ha!

 

2.  There are actually two "National" days worthy of mention! It is also National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.  Our men and women working in many areas of law enforcement put their lives on the line for us daily.  Do you know someone working in law enforcement who you can thank today?

Wisconsin State Trooper

Thank you to John's father who also was a Wisconsin State Trooper, his sister and our dear friend Mike K.

3.  At our house right now it is all about football.  Joe's Philadelphia Eagles barely won their game on Sunday to move forward in the playoffs and another chance to play in the Super Bowl this year.  Do you have a favorite team in the playoffs or does football make you yawn?  Is there a Super Bowl party in your future, no matter the teams playing?

No Football fans in this house. 

Baseball is our sport.

4.  Speaking of parties, there is always lots of food at parties I attend.  Tell us a weird food combination that you really enjoy (or have enjoyed).  It doesn't have to be party food.

I like having pickles with my spaghetti. Am I weird? 

5.  Since we are on games and parties, what game have you spent the most hours playing?

We have been playing Yahtzee. I got two Yahtzee the last time we played!

6.  Tell us something random about your week so far.

 We have NO SNOW! It is January 9th and we have NO SNOW!
Our family are Cross Country Ski people. Winter with NO SNOW.. GOODNESS!

I guess I will join Max and sleep until Spring.

Lawn Darts, Scavenger Hunts and Ladder Ball

We enjoy getting together with friends and family and playing lawn games. My new favorite is lawn darts. Have you ever played lawn darts? My husband shared with me that when he first played lawn darts they had a metal tip on the end. Not anymore.

 Our boys love scavenger hunts. We have enjoyed doing scavenger hunts for many years.

Ladder Ball is another family favorite.

Riddles in the Dark

Have you had the opportunity to go see the movie The Hobbit?

 The scene Riddles in the Dark was a favorite of ours. When Bilbo stumbles across Gollum in the dark caves under Misty Mountains he must use his wits in a challenge of riddles. Are you clever enough to take the challenge too?

Riddle 1:

What has roots that nobody sees 

Is taller than the trees

Up, Up it goes,

And yet never grows?

A mountain

Riddle 2:

Voiceless it cries,

Wingless flutters,

Toothless bites,

Mouthless mutters

The wind

Riddle 3:

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

On the Road Friday

Today we will be heading out to a baseball game. So get your popcorn, crackerjacks and peanuts ready.

We went to two Eau Claire Express games this summer. Lots of fun watching these young men try for the big league! Head over to the Eau Claire Express for more information.

We found it fun that you can be a host family to a young player. If you love baseball, like we do, this would be so much fun. You provide a home and bed for a player during the season. Your family receives free tickets for the season. Your family is able to attend special events. You have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the future of a young man. You might be getting to know a future Major League Baseball player!

 I love how ball fields look at night.

Guess what? Baseball is still in full swing! We love to listen to games. We only have a few t.v channels, and none of them air baseball. We love to listen! I think that is more fun. 

The Milwaukee Brewers are still playing and are fighting to stay in for a chance for the World Series!

Cheese Ball Game

I did not get the best of photos. I was in charge of this game at our Family Fourth of July party. I was laughing too hard, when I was not organizing.

Wanted to share this before Labor Day...just in case some of you are planning a Labor Day family party.

Shower caps

Shaving cream

Cheese Balls

Family Members

Team members...pick a person to wear the shower cap full of shaving cream. The other team member will stand in front of other member...and toss cheese balls into the shaving cream. The goal is to get as many cheese balls on your team members head of shaving cream. You are racing against another team.

What have I gotten myself into?

"Mom, are you sure this is a safe game?" Wait a minute! Looking at this picture...I think I see a cheese ball stuffed in that cheek!

Yay! We won!

We had a blast playing this...lots of laughs...and everyone smelled good.

Medal of Honor

Medal of Honor

Hundreds of athletes earn gold, silver and bronze medals. But there is one medal that only a few Olympians have earned, and it is the Pierre de Coubertin medal. The Pierre de Coubertin medal is also knows as the True Spirit of Sportsmanship medal, and it has been awarded only 11 times.

I am going to give a few fun facts about the Olympics for the next week. Here is a story about one of the winners of the Pierre de Coubertin medal.

Lawrence Lemieux

It was September 24, 1988, and the sailing competition was underway in the waters near Seoul, South Korea, site of the 1988 Olympic Games. The once-peaceful weather suddenly became very windy. A Canadian sailor named Lawrence Lemieux was running in second place when he noticed an emergency occurring on another course. A boat carrying two sailors from Singapore had turned over, injuring the men and dumping them into the sea.  Lemieux broke away from his race and headed straight for the sailors. He pulled them from the water and waited with them until a patrol boat came. Lemieux then rejoined his race, but he had lost so much time that he ended up in 22nd place.

The International Yacht Racing Union unanimously decided to award Lemieux second place and the International Olympic Committee gave him the Pierre de Coubertin award for displaying such great courage and self - sacrifice.
