Top of the Hodgepodge to Ya

Top of the Hodgepodge to Ya my friends.

Joyce asks the questions.

We answer the questions.

Click here to join the fun!

 1. I write the Hodgepodge questions so they'll post on Sunday, which sometimes throws me off in terms of what day it is. St. Patrick's Day will be celebrated on Monday, March 17th. Did you mark the day in some way? Wear green? Make a special meal? Watch or participate in a parade?

We made a special meal of corned beef, roasted potatoes and carrots. We boiled some cabbage and I made soda bread muffins.

 2. Do you think luck plays a part in your life? Explain.

This has been a question that has come up several times in discussion with my husband. We have a friend who thinks luck plays in the success of a marriage. My husband does not agree. It can get to be a real interesting conversation.

I will be interested in what other Hodgepodge friends write here for an answer.

3. Of the 15 green foods listed, which one is your favorite and how do you like it prepared? Any on the list that are a hard no for you? In general do you like fruits and veggies? As a kid did you eat them willingly or did you hide peas in your napkin hoping your momma wouldn't see?

Asparagus, avocado, broccoli, celery, cucumber, grape, green bean, kale, kiwi, lettuce, lime,
pear, peas, pistachios, spinach

Out of the 15 my all time favorite would be the cucumber. I LOVE cucumbers. I grow lots and lots of cucumbers in our garden. I love the snacking varieties. You usually can find me working in the garden and snacking on a cucumber.

Broccoli is a hard NO for me.

Yes, I enjoy fruit and veggies.

And the one veggie that I did roll up in a napkin or at least try, was beets. YUCK, I do not like beets and my mom made me eat beets.

4. What's something that makes you 'turn green'? (with envy or with illness... whichever way you want to run with it)

The smell of strong sewage can make me turn green with illness.

5. Did you spend a lot of time outdoors as a child? Doing what? Do you spend a lot of time outdoors now? Doing what?

Yes, I grew up on a dairy farm, we worked and played outside. My sister and I played outside in all the seasons.

Yes, I spend a lot of time outdoors. I garden and have a fresh cut flower business. I grow my own flowers for my bouquets. I love to be outside gardening. I also enjoy hiking, kayaking and simply sitting outside visiting with a friend.

 6. Insert your own random thought here.

The world is just about to go upside down... FIVE years ago on March 17th our state of Wisconsin started to shut down.

This is a photo of our National Guard son Sam. He is dressed to do COVID testing and give vaccines starting in May of 2020. These suits will become to hot for them to wear so they were able to wear scrubs after a month of working like this.

Sam worked testing and giving vaccines in the heart of Milwaukee with his team.

  1. What a reminder-ugh! As far as luck in marriage...hmmm...Off the top of my head I'd say marriage is living each day of your married life with intention and follow through, kindness extended in both small and large ways, forgiveness, lots of prayer, and humor definitely helps. I don't think I'd say luck plays a part, but perhaps two people amongst millions meeting is lucky?

  2. Eww yuck - bad smells can do it for me too! Sewer smells! 🤮
Marriage takes hard work. Luck has nothing to do with it.

  3. Your corned beef meal sounds delicious!
I am planning on trying to grow cucumbers this year in my garden.
I grew up on a farm too and it was such fun!
It's crazy to think the world was shutting down 5 years ago. It was such a scary time. Well done Sam for working through it, helping people.

  4. I'd say I believe in a bit of luck, timing, etc. The green list, I like them all! I naturally liked vegetables as a kid - I'd have to say avocado or broccoli as the fav. Beets, ugh- but I love beet tops, my mom would cook them with bacon. Yes, outdoors a lot! I usually make Irish soda bread, but I didn't this year - I may make it in the next week or so. And thank you to Sam for his work!

  5. Wow - that suit and mask looks so hot! I remember the fear we felt during those first months. I forgot all about beets. I do not like beets in any form or fashion. They are so pretty and I want to like them . . .but I can't!

  6. You can't beat corned beef for St Patrick's Day!

The suit that Sam is wearing must have been so hot ... it doesn't seem possible that five years has passed since Covid and I have had it twice!! Thankfully I recovered both times.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

    All the best Jan

  7. Your St. Patrick's Day meal sounded really yummy. We did the same except I made Irish soda bread not muffins. I think marriage is something that you have to work at and be able to handle both the good and bad. I do not think luck has anything to do with it. Have a great week. Hugs. Kris

  8. Cute cookie. Way to go on your St. Patrick's day meal. Sounds delicious. I'm not sure about the luck for a successful marriage. Glad you enjoy cucumbers. I do like a canned beet, but not as healthy as a fresh one which I don't eat. Yes, you are definitely an outdoor person. Playing as a kid was so much fun. That is very interesting about Sam and working on giving shots and testing for Covid.

  9. I don't think luck plays any part in good marriages. What does help is compromising and respecting each other's differences. My husband despises beets!!

  10. When I was a child, my great-grandmother said she would give me a certain amount of change for each pea I ate...maybe a penny for each pea. I forced myself to eat quite a few, but then vomited them up. she wouldn't give me the money!

  11. Oh boy, I remember that time so well and am so glad it is well behind us. I was nodding my head as I read your answers. I love pickling cucumbers and all kinds of cucumbers. I love their great fresh aroma, too. Luck in marriage...yikes. Happy Spring to you a few hours early!!

  12. Cucumbers are among my favorite of green veggies and my youngest LOVES them. I had two cucumber plants last year in the garden so we were never going to end up with bushels of them. They were doing all right but then seemingly overnight, the leaves started to turn yellow and that was pretty much it. I did a bunch of reading about it and basically, what I read was that the plants are susceptible to a fungus and to a certain type of bug destroying them. If you have any tips on ways to avoid losing the plants to rot, please let me know! I didn't know you had a fresh flower business! How cool is that??

  13. I didn’t make anything special for St. Patrick’s Day this year, but we did set up a leprechaun trap, and the kids were thrilled to find gold coins! It’s always fun to bring a little magic into the day.

I truly believe we have influence over our own “luck.” While circumstances play a role, our choices, mindset, and effort shape the path ahead. It’s always an interesting discussion!

As for green foods, I love all the veggies on the list—always have, even as a kid! I was never a picky eater. And while I don’t spend as much time outdoors as I’d like these days, I’m hoping to change that as the warmer weather rolls in.

Thinking about childhood cancer and the lack of funding absolutely makes me turn green. It’s heartbreaking and something that deserves far more attention and resources.

And wow—five years ago, I attempted a DIY cabinet painting project, and let’s just say… it did not go as planned. This year, I’m finally calling in some professional cabinet painters in Horsham, PA. Sometimes, it’s best to leave it to the experts!

That photo of your son is incredible. I can’t imagine how exhausting it must have been in that suit, but I’m so glad they were able to switch to scrubs. What an important role he played during such a challenging time.

Thanks for another great Hodgepodge—always enjoy reading your responses!

  14. So fun y'all had a traditional Irish meal. So nice you have the flower business!

  15. So much to comment on here, but the one thing that is sticking with me, believe it or not, is the thought of cucumbers. Yum! We sign up for a CSA food share every year, and I can't wait for the fresh cucumbers. I don't grow them here because I have very limited sun. But the fresh ones from the CSA...I can't wait!

  16. March 17, St. Patrick's Day, is my birthday, so I always celebrate lots. And wear green and my special shamrock necklace.
    My favorite spring flower? Daffodils!
We eat cucs every day. And lots of other veggies. I have my cucumber seeds-- waiting to plant in early May.

  17. Small holidays are eat out holidays. Thanksgiving at Crackerbarrel. St. Paddy's at Home Plate. When it's just the two of us, yeah, no cooking or clean-up. My luck is my faith. Pray for what I hope for, accept what I receive. And favorite green food? Avocados any way i can get them.

  18. I do like beets but only cold in salads. I love all green veggies and they are the best for you. I also love most fruits too. I did wear green to work for St. Patty's Day and not sure about the luck stuff. I think God has our back though. Janice

  19. Cucumbers are my favorite, too, although believe it or not, I really like broccoli! I hated it as a kid, but now I really like it...peas and brussel sprouts are my hard nos!! And hmm...the luck question is interesting...

  20. I can understand your love of cucumbers but was surprised that broccoli was a hard no lol.

  21. That suit and helmet sure look stifling! I like all green veggies, I didn't like peas as a kid but I don't mind them now. That cookie is so cute. I made lentil shepherd's pie for St. Patrick's Day and our daughter made some Irish soda bread.
