Things I hear...

We visited our local pumpkin patch this past week. Our local pumpkin patch does a wonderful job of doing field trips. They have a short pollination lesson. A time for the kids to share stories about gardening and what they like about fall.

 Remember the question is "What do you like about fall?" Many answered apple pie, caramel apples and apple crisp. Carving pumpkins, harvesting the garden and playing in the autumn leaves. When it came to this one little girl, she might have been four years old, she stated "Snowdrifts! I like snowdrifts!"

High Sea's

Summer Fun

The boys started a new game this summer....High Sea's!

It started with waves.

It was called High Sea's!

All you can hear is laughing!

A little rest.

Then I hear "Mom, we changed the name of this game. We call it Sumo wrestling!"

"Hey Mom, do you think this could be an Olympic event?"

Summer fun! We had a blessed summer. I hope you did too.

Earwigs

Do you know what an Earwig is? I wish I did not. This ugly insect has decided to live on our property for the past four years! The first two summers we tried to get rid of them on our own. We bought spray and granules to try and kill the EARWIG! It did not work. Last summer we called Guardian Pest Solutions, a wonderful thing happened. The tech  came to our home and blasted the earwigs. We were so happy. "No More Earwigs" we danced around the kitchen.

 June 23, 2012...I saw my first earwig in our garden fence...then I saw another...NOOOO they can not be back. Yes, they were. Tons of them. I called Guardian Pest Solutions....the tech came and sprayed and said "this should take care of them"

Yesterday, we found several more nests of Earwigs. This morning I declared WAR on the Earwig. I called Guardian Pest Solutions. When the tech showed up this morning, he said "I am getting my shotgun ready for them this time." He sprayed big time! 

We had to stay in the house for an hour and a half. After the time was done, we went to investigate. Yes, they were dead.

The earwig is so gross, because it gets into things. It likes to hide. When you move something tons of them drop out. Lawn decoration, furniture, toys, flowers and they EAT plants.

Our first summer having them, I picked a pretty bouqute of flowers for a sick friend. I gave them to her with a smile and she set them on the dinning room table. Drop, drop, drop the earwigs stared to come out of the sunflower, tons of them hid in the sunflower area of the flower. YUCK!! I declare war!

Have you had to deal with a PEST? How about earwigs, have you had to deal with earwigs? What did you do to get rid of your pest?


An interesting note, the tech told us that because Northwest Wisconsin is doing well this summer (no drought) it is like the Garden of Eden...all the bugs are leaving and coming to Northwest Wisconsin. A flying bug can travel 50 miles a night using the jet stream!! Wow! Our tech was very busy! I asked him to share a few fun stories about getting rid of pests. :) That was fun...and will be saved for another blog post.

Things I hear

Hello Friends,

Yesterday at church a list of... Things I have learned...compiled by kids was read. It was so fun. One of them has stuck in my mind and I have to share it.

Submitted by a ten year old girl - Do not, I repeat, do not baptize your cat!

Today I am still laughing, each time I see Max, I pat him on the head. He is such a good cat!

A real bathtub

We had one of our young friends over to play. He ventured into our bathroom and came out with a thrill, "You have a real bathtub! Wow, a real bathtub!" We all laughed and smiled, yes, I guess we do!

We purchased a "This Old House" we have tackled many projects. Our real bathtub was pink, red and white when we purchased the home. But after some research...(we looked on This Old House website) we found out that you can paint claw tubs yourself, using tractor paint. That is just what we did. Carrying this big old tub outside on to the deck was a chore! We also found another treasure, the date stamped into the bottom of the tub reads...1900 Kohler, Wisconsin!

 

Things I hear

I have two older friends. One who can not wait to get out of Wisconsin, once the cold starts to creep in. I have another who loves Wisconsin all the seasons. One day in October, they got into a discussion about staying or going. I loved this...

"You should really go to the Gulf with us, you will love it"

" No, I like to stay, I enjoy the winters"

"Why? they are soooo cold!"

"Well, I do not have anything to wear! You do not want to see this body in a swimsuit! It looks better in long underwear!"

Things I hear

We have a new friend, who recently lost his wife. He helped us plan our route to Texas. We still use maps. (Call us Vintage! or strange) We love maps. We are teaching our kids to read maps too. They like to have a map tucked close to them to track how far we are to our destination or what town is coming up. As our friend was busy helping us plan our route, he reminisced how his wife loved to be his co pilot. But she was hard on maps. She could not fold them and simply was hard on them. Sometimes he got irritated with her. Today, he said, "I wish she was here to be my co pilot. I would not care how rough she was on the map."

Love is God's greatest gift!

The things I hear

I was in charge of dessert at our school on Tuesday. As the kids came through the line, they all had big smiles on their faces as I dished up dessert, strawberry shortcake! The best part was when this 4th grade boy yelled out "Yes, my day is just getting better and better!" 

Lesson learned...enjoy the simple things!
